Repro carts for charity auction - FINISHED - SEE PICTURES !!

Post by Ziggy »

The 2 games are done, see here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 11#p520411

old post: edit: Carts and covers are almost finished, stay tuned for preview pics!

After the success with the repro carts in last year's charity auction, I will be making at least one repro to donate to this year's auction, possibly two. I'm not really looking for suggestions of what titles to make, though you can feel free to make any suggestions you want. If enough people express interest about a particular game I will take that into account.

I had an idea that I think is awesome, but I wanted to get some feedback before I go ahead and do it. Basically, I want to make "special edition" repro carts that differ in appearance to my regular carts. Ideas I had:

-Cart plastic colored "Racketboy blue"
-Front label having a "special edition" mark on it
-Back label (on a SNES cart) being completely different
-Any combination of the above ideas
-Any ideas you guys have!
-Will discuss details of these ideas below

The thing is, I know a lot of people really like to have their carts looking just like official carts for collection purposes. Though I think a special edition cart would be a really cool thing to have. The game itself would work like normal, but the cart's appearance would be a reminder of the donation you made from bidding on it. But yeah, I know some people would just rather have an official looking cart, so I wanted feedback for this idea before I go ahead and do it. After all, the purpose of these carts will be to raise money, so I'd rather have something that more people would like to bid on.

If I have the time to make 2, or even 3 carts, I will probably be making at least one special edition cart anyway. I would just like to know if I should make all of them this way or not. If a lot of people are opposed to the idea, obviously I wont make them all that way. So vote, the options are detailed below:

YES - would like to see special edition carts
MAYBE - would like to see them, but depends on how they look
NO - would not like them, no matter how they look

edit: By "would like to see special edition carts" I mean you would like to see them in the auction and intend on bidding on them.

So to go into a little detail about my ideas...

Coloring the cart plastic blue: The blue color would be to go with the color scheme of this site. I think it would look awesome, as well as stand out pretty good. But some people might like regular old grey carts, and maybe a "special edition" mark on the label(s).

Label ideas: For the front label, it would be much the same label as usual. I had a few ideas though. One, it would be the same label only I would put sort of a "stamp" on it saying something like "2011 Racketboy Charity Auction Edition" or something to that effect (make suggestions!). I even plan to use the Racketboy logo (I asked Racket for permission). Or I was thinking, for a SNES label, I could make the black part of the label blue to match the Racketboy color scheme. Of course, I would only make the label blue if the cart stays grey, I don't think both being blue would look good.

A lot of times I come up with different ideas as I'm creating it, but this is the basic idea I have right now. I would also love to hear suggestions though!

As for the back label of the SNES cart, I was thinking about making the entire label different. It would say something like "2011 Racketboy Charity Auction Edition" like my idea for the front label, only it would take up the entire back label (instead of just being a little stamp). I could also make the background blue, or keep it grey, or black maybe.

Or combinations of the above ideas. For instance, some one that wants the most pure, official looking cart might nto be opposed to the back label idea only, while the rest of the cart still looks normal.

Again, I'm open to suggestions. And you guys are the ones that will be bidding on these games, so voice your opinion!

And oh yeah, once I start playing with label ideas, I'll post them here as previews for feedback.

YES - would like to see special edition carts
For all the reasons you mentioned and for the fact it would be harder to pass off as a OMG RARE BETA on eBay.

MAYBE - would like to see them, but depends on how they look
I didn't participate last year but perhaps this year I will.

I would be interested in games that didn't come to our region/language.

I voted yes. It's a great idea.

Regarding the painted carts though, if it were me I'd do the front half of a cart in Racketboy Blue, and the back half in Black. Just because I think that would look really damn good.

Don't get me wrong though, all blue would be good too. I'm just saying.

Myself I prefer my games to have have that unity look, so different colored carts annoy me, that's just me.

I think putting something like the Racketboy logo then charity event edition is a good idea though.

Yes, for two reasons. As long as you're making repros, might as well take the opportunity to mix it up. And changing the look keeps the buyer from later re-selling the cart on Ebay as an original.

Awesome idea! I think that would look really good too. And it would also fit the site's color scheme as well.

Noted. If I get the time, I would like to make more than one cart, so I could do it where one cart is different color but the other cart isn't.

edit: Here's a rough draft of one idea:
