thank you Flake. I have a buddy whose son had Leukemia and they utilized this charity a few years back. When I heard of them 6 months or so ago, I knew already that I would be putting my vote in for them here.

One of my best friends has epilepsy, and thanks to this charity, he's doing much better than he was five years ago. He got a helper dog to help him be more social, and he's getting way fewer seizures than before (he has/had the kind where he just stares into space for a bit instead of falling all over the floor). These guys can really help, and I have a bit of a personal connection to it, as you can see.

There's some good smaller scale charities here in Denver, but that might be too focused for this purpose. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'll have a suggestion then.

Its tough to argue with the Tomorrow Fund, so that gets my vote.

It looks like so far we have these choices:

Tomorrow Fund (local to MA/RI/CT)
Epilepsy Foundation (National)
Autism Research (no specific charity suggestion)
Alzheimer's Research (no specific charity suggestion)

I'd like to get a list of 5-10 to choose from for a poll by the weekend, so keep suggesting! Again, suggestions of any charities that have previously helped a RB member or would be able to help members at the present time as they go through a hardship would be quite welcome!

Food Bank of the Rockies (I had to write out the link, it keeps breaking for some reason)

Collecting and distributing food for people too poor to afford it across Colorado and Wyoming. I've donated food at drives sponsored by this group many times over the years.

We've never had to actually utilize food donations, but most of my family has been dangerously close at times in years past.

Denver's Road Home

An attempt to curb the homelessness problem in Denver, which is unfortunately large. Its sobering to roll by the Denver Rescue Mission at certain times of day and seeing a couple hundred people milling around nearby, waiting for them to open their doors.

I read a nice story about two soldiers that fought side by side throughout WWII. The day they were discharged, they were so eager to get back home that they just split and never heard from one another since. Recently, they were reunited, partly thanks to a non-profit service called Honor Flight. Apparently Honor Flight gets veterans free flights so they can be reunited with people. I didn't research Honor Flight or anything, just read about that in the paper today, but I thought it sounded cool.

I'd probably rather donate to something more like Autism, cancer, etc. But I figured I'd at least mention this anyway.

I've got to throw in a vote for Alzheimer's research, though I also don't know of a specific charity.

My Grandmother was diagnosed with it within the past year or two, and it's really taking a toll on her, my Grandfather, and the rest of our family. For those who don't know people with it, it's a bit hard to explain, but it's like losing your whole personality in a lot of ways, it's really bad. I sure as hell wish there was more research being put into it.
