Newly aquired DC light gun not working

Post by jay_red »

Just picked up a pelican brand DC light gun, and when I plug it in I can get the memory card beep, but nothing else works. The only thing I noticed was that the plug is kind of hard to put in (not too bad) and the 3 contacts inside the plug seem to be a little farther back than my other controllers.

It has not been opened (still has a warranty sticker), but I have no problem doing so, just need an idea of what to look for that could cause the problem.

What kind of TV do you have? Light guns don't work on non-CRT screens. So if you have a newer LCD screen or whatever, you're boned- you need to pick up a CRT.

Even flatscreen CRTs occasionally have issues with light guns.

I am well aware of the limitations of a light gun on anything but a CRT, my issue is that the gun doesnt respond at all, the d-pad doesnt work, the start button doesnt work, the VMU beeps when turned on, but doesnt display anything. I tried in all the ports, and even with a different dreamcast to no avail.

You might have already done this, but if not, go ahead and clean the connector that goes into the controller port. The last light gun I bought did not respond to any input, however, the LEDs came on when it was plugged in. I got a qtip and some rubbing alcohol, cleaned the connector, and the next thing I knew I was blasting away zombies.

If you still have no luck, open it up and see what the damage is. Not sure where you bought it from, but hopefully you can return it somehow if it was damaged prior to you owning it.

Some (or all, I am not sure) of DC light guns are NOT region-free. This is one of the very few accessories on any console like this. So, does the region of your DC match the light gun?

Also, not only non-CRT TVs do not work with light guns, but flatscreen CRTs also do not work with them.

Hmm, I thought that all DC light guns were region free, just some games locked out the different region guns (the games disabled them, not the system). But I have no way to test.

As far as the flatscreen CRT comment, while valid, I don't think it applies to this specific situation:

The d-pad and start button, etc. should work even if there is no TV attached to the DC. The actual "light gun" portion of the light gun won't work, however.

This doesn't sound like a region compatability issue. Spiritplx is rite! There is no such thing. Its perhaps a loose or faulty wiring. I personally never dealt with Pelican brand DC gun. Only Performance, Sega and Madcatz brand. Try using the gun without any devices inserted into the VM slot and see what happens.

Flat screen crt not compatible? I blast away on my 2 flat crts all the time. Never an issue...

Maybe that is it. All I know is that there are some JP region guns that do not work on a US DC.

Only the Dreamcast branded Japanese Lightgun won't work on American released Dreamcast games, software not hardware thru just certain the games.

THIS
My Interact Lightguns would not work when TWO were plugged in with puru force packs. I had to remove the puru packs for the pair of Lightguns to work. If I use only one Lightgun, the vibration pack would work. Try player port two also. If the buttons still won't work, maybe a bad connection or defective wire?

Once you get the buttons to work
What is the make and model number of your CRT? The Dreamcast Lightgun will only work on 480i tubes, flat or curved CRTs don't matter as long as its not HD. Even EDTVs may give scan problems. However the Dreamcast Lightgun also works in VGA with a computer monitor CRT. :D

Nope. It's not a hardware nor a gun accessory that have anything to do with region lock. It's all software specific. If u boot up a JPN version HOTD2 on a US DC console, the Sega official light gun will work. So..... it's really the US HOTD2 game that refuses to recognize it. It's not hardware!
