I splurged a bit at FYE today...though I ended up with 12 movies for about $45 (buy 1 get 1 half off sale), so that's pretty good!

I bought:

$13 - Nightmare on Elm Street 1-8 - bought this across two of those 2-packs of dual sided DVDs...I am ashamed to admit that I have never seen more than one of these in their entirety!
$10 - Dead Snow (Blu) - intrigued by this one. I've never seen it. but have heard good things.
$5 - I Spit on Your Grave (Blu) - I have never seen this infamous film, and the price was right for a buy since it was half off...
$14 - Machete (Blu) - have seen it and enjoyed it, so wanted to add it to the collection
$4 - Zombieland (Blu) - have seen it a few times, this was the right price for owning it.

Anyway, I am sure I'll get around to a few of these before the month is out :D

you are a cinematic moron! Go fix this!

seen it many times. Classic, but surely fucked. Be prepared. It's much worse than Last House.

loved it. Y'all know about my Lohan obsession right? Ooh. I've said too much.

loved it.

For whatever reason I just couldn't get into Craven's stuff when I was a kid/teen, but that's before I became more of an afficiando of the genre. I am looking forward to delving into his catalog....

Last House is on Netflix, and I plan to watch that before the Freddy movies. I haven't seen it either.

I am a bit ashamed of not having seen much of Craven's filmography. I have seen 2 or 3 of the Scream films, Red Eye, and...that might be it. I am much more familiar with Carpenter's oeuvre, all of Romero's films, Raimi's stuff, a lot of Roger Corman's horror work, Tobe Hooper's films, and recent folks like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie's...Craven is def the biggest "hole" in my horror movie fandom.

^^^ You are still missing Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Ti West (The House Of The Devil is the shit and I was OK with Cabin Fever 2), Kiyoshi Kurosawa and many other horror directors.

Oh yeah, it MUCH worse. The lack of music, the lengthy rape scenes (3 rapes in less than 40 minutes :x ) and the grainier presentation (Compared to TLHOTL) make it much more disturbing. By the way noise, did you see the remake? I saw it like 4-5 months ago and I was very dissapointed, specially after Jennifer randomly becomes Jigsaw and starts making weird traps and machines to kill the rapists.

HOTD is brillaint. BUT WHAT could you possibly have liked about Cabin Fever 2? I love the first, but 2 was probably my most hated movie I've put myself through. Seriously.

yeah, the original is so brutal. I have not seen the remake yet. Or the remake of LHOTL but plan to at some point.

It was gross and fun, although I was sick with a very intense flu so maybe I could've enjoyed anything (Seriously, I could've watched Alone In The Dark and I would have probably enjoyed it). The big problem is that it feels unfinished due to other people fucking up the film, hell, look at this trivia from IMDB:
After extensive re-editing and re-shooting by the producers, writer/director Ti West requested to have his name removed from the film and replaced with the popular pseudonym Alan Smithee. Since he was not a member of the DGA his request was denied by the producers and he remains credited as the film's director. West has since disowned the final product claiming that it is more a product of the producers and executives than that of his own. It is unknown if there will ever be a "directors cut" released featuring West's original vision.
As for the remakes of TLHOTL and I Spit On Your Grave, the big problem is that the revenge scenes are so cold, brutal and sadistic that they make you feel bad about the rapists, that shouldn't happen on a rape/revenge film  .

it was gross, but I didn't find it fun. I thought the allusions to the Columbine shooting were in terribly poor taste. You, not living in the US, were probably able to dismiss those though. I'm not even sure if that's well-known there? Did you pick up on them?

Nope, if I did I'd be offended, I may live in Mexico but making fun of Columbine isn't cool.

agreed. It started off fun enough to me, and even the gross-out shit was fine enough. But towards the end there were scenes that directly mirrored events of Columbine that I found to just be wrong. They seemed to be present for no reason other than shock-value, which to me was just fucked.

Now realize West actually filmed CF2 before HOTD, so my hope is that he's figured out how to make good movies here on out. (The Roost was so-so, and Trigger Man looks like shit.)

So I just watched Last House on the Left and will post a proper review in the proper movies thread...

but suffice to say, I enjoyed it. I didn't see the last act coming until it was just about underway, and I didn't find the gruesome scenes to be as horrible as they are in more recent films....but I was very impressed with the film's tackling of the subjects it did, in the way it did, in 1972! It is hard to believe the film was made two years before Texas Chainsaw Massacre would just blow the top off the genre...

By far the highlight was the whimsical soundtrack juxtaposed perfectly with everything going on. The performances were believable (for the most part) and the social commentary was smart. Overall a nice introduction to early Craven!
