For example, when I play a SNES ROM, I use a SNES controller hooked to a Super Smart Joy (USB adapter). I don't use any cheats or save states (I actually don't even know how!), if I have to leave suddenly I just leave the game paused and running.

I also have a USB adapter for N64 controllers (I really don't see how you can emulate N64 games without one of these), a Saturn-style USB controller, and a Logitech gamepad that looks like a PS2 controller.

Back in the day I used to emulate nothing but turn-based JRPGs and would use a keyboard for controls. Can't imagine going back to that now, although my friend played through a Donkey Kong Country ROM with just a keyboard!

I'd like to get into emulation on the PSP, but I have no idea how to do it.

I assume this also means you'll go out of your way to use the most accurate emulators possible then? I.E., you won't touch an SNES emulator that isn't bsnes?
I've heard of it, but never used it. I've been using SNES9X for over a decade. Tried ZSNES a few times, but didn't care for the interface.

I've used bSNES and it's really a step up over SNES9x in accuracy. One thing to keep in mind is that you're going to need a beefy machine to run bSNES.

bSNES isn't bad, but I do prefer snes9x myself thesedays. I was a hardcore fan of ZSNES for years, but I realized when I got this new Win7 PC last year that it's really not worth it anymore on a modern system. snes9x is superior in every way to me, and games look fantastic to me. And no I don't throw on those lame filter effects, heh.

Only problem is when I tried playing the Megaman X games earlier this year, I swear they felt... oddly laggy on snes9x and ZSNES when I tried them back to back on both emulators. Maybe it's just been such a long time since I've played the games I kind of forgot how they "feel" or whatever.

Emulation has its place, but the authentic console experience is superior. I doubt that adds anything to the thread, but hey, another two cents in the jar of that particular opinion.

Which emulator did you try?

I totally agree!! 8)

Emulation is also great for trying out some games you may be interested in but want to check them out before adding them to your gaming collection

I'm in a very Gray area in this argument and I have a long-winded explanation of this.

I love seeing the old plastic run. I worked on arcade machines just to see how they ran, I just loved playing snail maze on my master system for the first time(which was a week ago. ) But emulation offers a bit of fun as well: In portability. I enjoyed running through ristar when I bought it, but I have little free time at home. So more often than not I fire up my laptop at lunch, on the way home on the bus, or while loitering at the gamestore and play ristar using my saturn USB controller. I also do the try before I buy method(mostly at the gamestore, I'll read up a game, nab a rom, play for a minute and then buy it if I like it.) I use mame to play two player games with friends away from home(I won't Carry my X-men:COTA cab ever!) and my game gear died, My third one. So I emulate for it. I just refuse to emulate the saturn, and dreamcast, My pc sucks and those require good hardware. I don't always emulate, and I think plastic is better, But emulating is good for a guy like me on the go.
