Is the Sega Saturn superior to all PlayStation 1 ports?

I'm just curious, I always thought that the Sega Saturn always had the superior ports such as playing X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, and MegaMan 8.

But now what has gotten more intrigued as someone brought up an interesting argument that they preferred CastleVania Symphony of the Night for the PS1 over the Saturn, I understand it's a preference but I find it interesting enough to have a debate.

I understand there are rpg games that have came out for the Saturn such as Grandia, Lunar and others. So I'm just curious for those that are hearing me out, though the Saturn basically kicked the crap out of the PlayStation with Capcom games, can their be a counter argument how the PlayStation did some good porting for other games? Thanks for reading!

Donpachi is definitely better on the ps1.

Strikers 1945 II is also better on the ps1, although the first game is best on the saturn.

... I only really know about shmups

The conventional wisdom concerning games on PS1 and Saturn is that if it's 2D, the Saturn version will be better. If it's 3D, the PS1 version will be better.

Pretty much what I've heard and what I've experienced, most of the time. There are exceptions, of course. In The Hunt is 2D and actually runs better on PS1.

I find that funny that the PS1 and the Sega Saturn are as different as night & day when it comes to compatibility issues. Both are my favorite systems and came out roughly the same time. The Saturn is theoretically more powerful than the PS1 (I think of a PS3 & Xbox 360 comparison for some reason ) and somehow the PSX still managed to pool the whool over the Saturn's eye.

Wow, I was doing reviews where it was showing how the Sega Saturn had all the better ports and somehow the PlayStation had the better marketing which is how they ended up winning, now I'm starting not to believe that anymore. The only edge that I know that Sega Saturn received was from Capcom games or 2D fighting games in general.

When it comes to arcade ports, for at least a generation Namco's arcade hardware was based on or shared a lot in common with the Playstation. Most of those ports were nearly arcade perfect. Even after Namco moved on to another generation of hardware, they were damned good at porting things over to the Playstation.

Other arcade ports are hit or miss. The original release of Street Alpha 2 was a horrible mess on the Playstation, while the Saturn version was incredibly close to the arcade version. However, when the "Gold" version of Alpha was released with the Street Fighter Collection for both systems, the Playstation version was on par.

Symphony of the Night was originally designed for Playstation hardware. The Saturn version is a shoddy port with some extras thrown in. The game slows down in areas it shouldn't and the 3D effects and transparencies are a mess. That said, some still consider it to be the "true" version of SotN. There are two areas that you will only find in the Saturn version. Maria is also completely different from her later counterpart in the PSP version.

Now that I think about it, I don't think the Sega Saturn would have been able to handle the specifically dedicated Tekken 3, Virtua Fighter 2 looked pretty ugly and it could barely handle that as well yet alone trying to take on the speed and smoothness of Tekken 3 ( by the way, didn't the PS1 do a a tag tournament? as well?)

The Saturn port of Donpachi has poor sound quality, and slightly poorer graphics. It also has horrid loading times.

Its still playable, and much cheaper then the ps1 port, so its what I play (TATE only)

Saturn wins in the Dodonpachi dept though, and has Garegga and Batsugun, just to name a few, so its far superior in my book
