"Keeping MacFarlane engaged will be the greatest challenge for Fox executives. Over lunch at Bouchon on Sept. 13, a single MacFarlane, fresh off of his R-rated Sheen skewering, utters the words they fear most. "Part of me thinks that 'Family Guy' should have already ended. I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series," he says of a show that launched its 10th season last month."

There ya go, folks.
If even the MacFarlane admits it's gone too far, it'd definitely gone too far. And I have to disagree with his statement about seven seasons being the right length for a TV show. I think 90% of shows shouldn't have more than four seasons. Only the very best talent can keep a show just as good past season four.

I felt Family Guy was so poorly written and the jokes were getting so obvious such as repeating Disney & Jewish and making parodies of Hitler recycled over and over again and making World War II references. People eat it up but what also gets to me is how they lazily set up a gag and now they have two spin offs of American Dad and Cleaveland show, it's like an hour and a half of watching animation that is inferior than newgrounds.com and is much more limited to the type of humor and gags they can put out due to censorship.

Robot Chicken for the win regardless :P lol

American Dad is not a spinoff of Family Guy.

They're practically the same show, it might as well be.

This statement tells me you've never actually bothered to watch American Dad.

You're wrong on all but three.

I don't think they need MacFarlane at all.

That is not a compliment for either.

Season 5 seems to be where a couple of shows I've watched peak. Buffy, Supernatural, Angel, for example. Chuck is actually ending with its fifth season starting this month and it looks like it will be the show's best. This seems to be the path a lot of shows take:

Season 1 - Don't really know what we're doing yet
Season 2 - Okay, cool. We're starting to find our voice, our purpose and our style. The show is finding its groove and people are digging it
Season 3 - Running on all cylinders, our show is officially great. We've got this shit down
Season 4 - So what now? Time to experiment and try something new. Go outside the comfort zone and hope we don't fuck up a good thing
Season 5 - Okay, we've gone through our experimental phase. We're a more well rounded show as a result. we're fresh and interesting again, we're seasoned and we have four seasons of continuity, mythology and actors who know their roles like the back of their hand. Let's bring it all together for the best season ever and knock this shit out of the park!

Yeah, pretty much. American Dad never seemed like anything more than a slightly better version of Family Guy. Though, I'd honestly take a good Stewie/Brian episode of Family Guy over ANYTHING in American Dad. They never matched the awesomeness of those two characters with anyone in American Dad

Overall, I think both of those shows need to be put out to pasteur along with the Simpsons and South Park. I feel like these shows are the old guard, old vets that are past their prime. Time to go and make way for newer, fresher shows. I hear people raving about that show Archer

Maybe you're right about live-action shows; but I mainly watch cartoons. Most cartoons start sucking in the 5th season. I suppose live-action shows, with their larger budgets (which they can use to hire top-notch writers) can stay fresh longer.
