Ps2 or Gamecube controller?

Post by swiftzx »

So I have been debating with some friends on which controller is better and we don't have a clear winner. That is where you guys come in and discuss which is your preferred controller. I prefer the gamecube controller since it fits nicely in my hands, lasts longer than my ps2 controllers, and button placement feels natural to me.

I voted the Gamecube controller, I have always disliked the Analog Sticks used in the Playstation controllers, they just feels like loose, why I can't play FPS's on a PS3, just feels sloppy.

I only wish the Gamecube had a better Dpad (I know it is a 1 for 1 for the GBA's Dpad), but considering it is not used that much during most games, I can forgive it.

The Gamecube controller is very comfortable, which is surprising considering its bizarre design. PS2 controller is horrible, I hate dual analog sticks and double shoulder buttons. The PS3 controller is even worse, feels too small and flimsy and the shoulder buttons are hard to push. Maybe that's why they sell those stupid ass extender things at Gamestop.

Controller design peaked with the SNES, if you ask me.

And why is Jaguar even an option here? lol.

Gamecube all the way!

The Gamecube controller is amazingly comfortable, I like the feel of the analogue shoulder buttons, the analogue stick is really nice, and the "bizarre" button placement is actually brilliant, and great for most games. Cons? The D-pad is an obvious one, and I find nearly impossible to use for most games (luckily, I play nearly all my fighters on Saturn and Dreamcast anyways though), the Z Button does seem a bit of an after thought, with a really weird placement, but I don't have any quarrels with it, truth be told. And finally, yeah I don't understand why they didn't just make the C-stick a full-blown analogue stick like the main one. Overall though, the cons don't bother me too much.

The PS2 controller, I really just do not like. It's a jack of all trades, and master of none. It's so averagely average, and it does annoy me slightly how most mainstream gamers I know seem to think it's the best and they always complain at the controller if I introduce them to another console. Firstly, I HATE the analogue sticks. I hate that they're both down at the bottom. It seems really uncomfortable for my hands. I hate how loose they are and how 'cheap' they feel. I also hate on games when they make you click them in as an extra button. I really cannot play FPSs easily using the controller. Next, I'm not a big fan of the shoulder buttons. Overall though, I just don't find the controller all that comfortable in my hands. Pros? The D-pad is pretty good, the button placement is conservative and can't easily offend (although the use of symbols irritates me, as I've always been an 'A,B, etc' kind of guy) and finally the controller shape is made so it fits easily in most people's hands, although I don't find it all that comfortable.

The PS controller was never designed with analogues in mind, considering they're just tacked on extra bits to the original PSone model. PS controllers are ones I have a bit of contempt for, as they serve well enough for just about anything, without excelling at anything.

The GCN pad feels lovely from the get go, shapes into the entire hand, and I've found the slightly irksome d-pad to be dealable-with on the odd occasion I've had to use it.

That's a lot of hatin for the PS2 controller. I like both equally, I really can't say which I like more. Playstation controller is bit more boring, as I've used it for long, but it doesn't mean it isn't highly functional controller.

I would say PS2 controller isn't most comfortable controller, but for large hands GC controller isn't most comfortable either. PS2 controller can be held in different ways, it's like that is it's focus rather than ergonomics. The buttons are all laid out in very accessible fashion, and I really don't understand why someone doesn't like the analog stick placement. I mean, anything can be disliked, but... Four shoulder buttons is also good, as more fingers can be used for control.

GC controller design is fun and surprisingly intuitive to use, but I wouldn't say it's as functionable and versatile as PS2 controller. It's great if you just want to hold the controller in lazy fashion. Due to ergonomics it fits hands better (in that fixed position it's designed for).

I chose PS2. I think the DualShock feels like an extension of the SNES controller. I always liked the GCN controller -- especially the added weight of the WaveBird, but I never thought the shape of the X and Y buttons were great.

I like the gamecube controller best out of the 3.My only complaint would be the D-pad for sure! Its tiny, and hurts your thumb.PS2 analogs are terrible and arent what they should be and as for Jaguar never held one so cant say.

GC-Wavebirds
PS2-Logitec wireless..in this case both are tied

In their wired forms I like both controller about equally. I'm a fan of neither controller's D-Pads and while the Gamecube's C-Nub is awkward, the proper placement of it's left analogue stick makes up for that. I like both controllers face buttons and I like the utility of four shoulder buttons on the PS2 as much as I like the excellent placement of the Gamecube's shoulder buttons (Z button is pretty much equivalent to the Select button in my mind). With that, the thing that puts the Gamecube's over the edge is the Wavebird.

tl;dr If Sony had put out a first party wireless controller I would have voted for the PS2.

Gamecube controller is my favourite controller ever. So instead of adding more about why it's so great, I'll instead say why dislike the PS2 controller so much.

The main, most obvious reason is the analogue sticks. The grips don't seem to keep your thumb in place on the stick as well as Nintendo's analogue sticks, and even the 360 stick. The sticks feel loose and inaccurate and the circle shape around them doesnt help that at all the stick has a tendency to slide around it a little too easily. I like the octagon thing nintendo has going on a lot. Now this one is probably a problem with just me, but because both sticks are at the bottom center (seeing as I use the stick more, I really resent this, it makes me have to stretch over the misplaced d-pad awkwardly) they end up being rather close together. I find that I can actually hit my thumbs together if I move the left stick right and the right stick left.

There are other reasons too. I feel the D-pad is badly designed and awkward to hit the diagonals, meaning it doesnt seem all that hot for fighting games either, which are likely the only genre I'd use it on. The shoulder button design feels a little out of date now compared to the triggers and analogue buttons of the other consoles. The PS3's stupid slidy R2 and L2 don't improve anything. And the controller feels really light, which for some reason bothers me. No idea why, it just feels kinda cheap.

I actually would rate most of my controllers for other consoles over the playstation line of controllers. Even 3DO and Virtual Boy and N64 (I know lots of people hate this one). I really dont like them
