At the moment I don't have any tangible goods to show for it, but I'm a massive connoisseur of Japanese punk, hardcore, noise, and thrash. The Stalin, The Comes, Gauze, GISM, SOB, Boredoms, Death Side, Lip Cream, Brain Death, Gudon, Confuse, Nightmare, Damnable Excite Zombies, Systematic Death, The Gaia, The SS, Melt-Banana, Exclaim, and Razors Edge are all big favorites of mine. At the moment I have my first Japanese vinyls, "Mushi" by The Stalin and "No Side" by The Comes coming in the mail, so I'll be sure to upload pictures when they come my way.
All those bands kick ass! I'm pissed I'm going to miss Melt Banana at the end of this month. I'll be playing "The Fest" in Gainseville, FL while they're in NY.

Didn't see this band mentioned.
Jellyroll Rockheads One of the fastest HC bands i've ever heard.

You just might be my musical soul-mate. I didn't include Jellyroll Rockheads since I already had Razors Edge on there (Kenji Razors sings for both), but yes, Jellyroll Rockheads are in my top 10 most-played bands on Last.FM! "Fade Out", "I'm At My Wit's End", "Good Times Rollin'", and their cover of "No Skate No Thrash" all get infinite plays from me. Plus "Jellyroll Rockheads" is one of my favorite band names of all time, haha.

I'm having to decide between seeing OFF! in Nashville or Melt-Banana and Spelling Bee in St. Louis on October 17th. As great as talking to Keith Morris again would be, Melt-Banana just seems like such an adventure.

What's the name of your band, man? From what I've heard from your musical posts so far, I can't imagine that I wouldn't enjoy it. Plus, do us both a solid and tell me if you guys ever come out to Nashville!

Unfortunately I'm not Japanese, but I listed all my recent projects in this thread. (2nd post)

Hahaha, I don't think that I was asking you to be Japanese. I'll give you (in your various forms) a listen soon, man!

I just want to say that those are some fucking brilliant album covers.

I've never listened to anything before in this Genre - so I'll have to check some of these bands out. I'm more of a metal fan though than a punk one (there aren't many forms of punk I can tolerate).

^ The Japanese punk scene had some really heavy crossover elements across the board -- you have a few straight-and-away punky types like Laughin' Nose, but Japan had hardcore bands about as soon as anyone else (including America) (to illustrate this, a clip from I believe around 1978 or '79:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS0aSJd-cGg, so they jumped into experimentation with metal pretty early and heavily. In fact, I used to be on the opposite side of the spectrum as you -- total punk guy, didn't click with metal -- but crossover bands like GISM and Death Side built a healthy appreciation for the genre. Even if you're not into punk persay, you owe it to yourself to check out Japan's DIY alternative scene. Punks and metalheads often argue, trying to claim alot of the bands in this scene for their own... if you come into it looking for "weird metal" you probably won't be disappointed.

GISM is one of those bands that you just need to dive right into, expecting either metal or hardcore based on your preference. I wouldn't take the experience away from anyone by over-explaining them until they'd listened to "Detestation" (the whole thing is up on YouTube, give it a listen). Regardless of how you feel about it, do some research on them after the fact and you'll gain a deeper... let's say "respect" for them. http://querenciazine.blogspot.com/2008/ ... id-of.html Plus their guitarist Randy Uchida was an absolute prodigy.

While GISM more fucks with your expectations than anything, Death Side legitimately satisfies both ends of the spectrum. I've yet to meet a person with a palette for abrasive music who doesn't just adore this song:

If you're into metal and have an interest, I'd definitely start with those two.

Cool! I really liked Deathside, they were a nice blend of Metal and Punk it seemed to me. I guess I'll delve into GISM and give them a listen.

Not a whole lot, except THANK YOU for mentioning them. I discovered them a few months ago, then promptly forgot their name entirely, so you've done me and my friend a huge solid! Clearly I've just gotten into them, but I've loved what I've heard so far. Being a lover of female vocalists in punk/metal/et cetera, Japan has been like a goldmine for me. I can't stress my love for The Comes enough, though -- I uploaded all of "No Side" to YouTube for anyone interested!

Holy shit I can't believe there is a thread like this (and I don't have time to read it right now!). I love tons of extreme Japanese bands. Off the top of my head: Melt-Banana, GISM, Gallhammer, Bastard, Corrupted, Gauze, Disclose, The Stalin, Confuse, Assfort, Sigh, Envy, Boris, 324, and Unholy Grave are among my favorites.

As far as releases go, I own the Discordance Axis/Corrupted/324 split album and a great Japanese crust comp called "What is Crust?". There's probably more I'm forgetting though. Great thread!
