you're not daft. We talked about that in the nomination thread. I was pushing for a JRPG like Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia seeing as how Ys was similar to Golden Axe Warrior. I'm interested in finally delving into a WRPG, but I know myself -- and I think picking a game that's not available on any consoles mean I'll be doing something else that month.fastbilly1 wrote: Maybe I am daft, but dont Ys and Golden Axe Warrior play similar?

Right, but as always people are encouraged to play spin offs or other games in the series (e.g. Splatterhouse 2, 3, 2010, or Wanpuku Graffiti.)fastbilly1 wrote:The choice is for Baldur's Gate. Because I just started play BG:DA with the assumption that we weren't playing it and only going to play the first one.

I don't see how Ys and Golden Axe Warrior play similarly at all. GAW is a Zelda ripoff and I wouldn't compare Ys and Zelda. Why does it matter was GAW in Together Retro recently or something?noiseredux wrote:you're not daft. We talked about that in the nomination thread. we're going to play GAW in January.
Re: Poll 1 - RPG
You really have to split hairs to find a difference between Ys 1 and Zelda. Ys barely fits in the RPG category, because you level up by fighting enemies, where in Zelda you power up based on items you find. The leveling mechanic in Ys is really weak though, you don't even get points to spend on skills.
Otherwise, the games are extremely similar.
As for why it matters that Ys and Golden Axe Warrior are so similar? GAW has been chosen as our "adventure" title this time around. It would suck to have two very similar title so close together, and neglect the western RPG which is long over due for some attention.

Voted for Baldur's Gate.

I was speaking more of the way you play the game, in Ys the whole world scrolls with you, in Zelda it is one screen at a time. In Zelda you use swing a sword, use a boomerang, or a bomb to fight enemies. In Ys 1 you run into the enemies. In most versions of Ys 1 (not SMS) you have voice acting and anime cut scenes, in Zelda you don't.Hatta wrote:You really have to split hairs to find a difference between Ys 1 and Zelda. Either way I say tough choice, I think Ys is an important game to have played, as is Baldur's Gate.

Split hairs to find differences in Ys and Zelda? I don't agree with that.
That would be like saying every turned-based rpg is just like phantasy star
