You know, I've always wondered if I was an idiot or not, thanks for clearing that up for me.
I'm glad I could help.
Seriously though. Yes i'm all for buying a PS3 for BD, but for gaming, just hold off. There's no point buying one yet. Wait until next year when the price drops some more (unless they take out even more features…) or in fact wait for 2 years and get it when it's around £150.
There's only a handful of games, none of which could be considered a killer app. Uncharted came close but it's no Bioshock.
The PS3 just isn't credible as a gamers machine, for that you need a 360. Until the PS3 really gets going it just isn't worth the price for gaming alone.

It's all about preference. Both machines have games that could warrant a purchase, even if we don't like them. I bought my original Xbox and my Xbox 360 based upon Dead or Alive 3 + 4, respectively. I'm sure most people wouldn't have made the same decision based on those games, but there you go. Different strokes for different folks.
The idea that there are some credible gaming machines while others are discredited (are there certificates being handed out that I don't know about?) is silly at best.
As far as a frugal gamer looks at it, one console offers much more value compared to the other.
PS3 has 6 titles that are exclusive and good (according to metacritic > 80). The console costs £300 and the games are RRP £49.99 / £54.99. Most shops sell between £40 and £45 brand new
The 360 has 17 exclusive titles that are good (according to metacritic > 80), the console costs £140 and the games are RRP £44.99 £49.99. Most shops sell between £30 and £45 brand new.
That's not accounting for all the games that are multi-platform AND up until recently, run smoother on 360 than the PS3 version.
As far as value for money is concerned the 360 wins outright. You can't argue with the figures.
That is the reason you'd be silly for buying a PS3 SOLELY for games (which was my original argument). I'm not saying don't buy one. I'd be a hypocrite (I own one) to say that. I'm saying for somebody who isn't interested in the blu-ray playback would be a fool to buy one and would be throwing their money away.

I bought mine solely for GT5 and the downloadable PSOne games, I dont feel cheated or a fool for buying my PS3 just for games, Im quite happy with my purchase, as another person said on this thread that it depends on the games that appeal to you, also even though it has been said and proven that multiplatform games run better on 360 over PS3, isnt it kindof unfair to compare first generation PS3 games to second 360 games, the developers were still learning the ropes with the console, now PS3 games are starting to look and run better than 360 (CoD4 which i can really say does run better than 360 when my friend and i ran them side by side). But in the end it depends what kind of games appeal to you, GT5 is my cup of tea, but somebody else may find Mass Effect more appealing. It just depends on the person, thats all there is to it, no better or worse console, just different.
What about the hardware problem, i.e. RROD??? What about HDD inclusion/exclusion??? What about backward compatibility??? What about the price??? There are so many factors when it comes to buying a new console.
For me personally, I don't want to buy or even consider the 360 until they fix the hardware problem. I don't want the PS3 because of no BC and the ridiculously high price for the current model. That's why I am searching for a 20/60 GB for cheap.
So no, it's not just about the game. I may love MGS4 and have preordered it, but I ain't crazy or rich enough to buy a PS3 right now. If you have the money, then by all mean, buy either one or both and add the Wii while you're at it. For the rest of the poor folks like myself who think about gas prices every time we drive our car, that is a luxury we don't have. We have to be smart and frugal with our purchases, to get the most bang for our hardworking bucks. Money don't grow on tree my friend.

For value and games the 360 wins hands down. For media support the PS3 has it. The main reason I have a PS3 is for BD and the odd exclusive like uncharted, ratchet & clank and in future, GT5 and MGS4. In the UK the Premium is usually £180. That's nearly half the price of the PS3 and runs the same games. Anyone buying a PS3 for the games is an idiot.
The rest of the non-PAL world, pricing is pretty much the same (hdd size and free cables not withstanding in price differences). Nothing like a 50quid/$100 difference... That's outrageous.
Personally, the only exclusive game I want on the 360 is Mass Effect and a few XBLA games. Otherwise multiplatform games are on the PS3 that I want and I've read reviews that say there's no significant differences between the titles (except sports titles which I don't play). So with all the RROD and other crap I keep hearing about on the 360, it doesn't seem to be an attractive proposition for me. Elite $450, 40GB PS3, $400. Though they're both too expensive for what they don't quite offer me yet (a very attractive library of titles and reasonably priced hardware).
I would agree that with the pricing in the UK, yeah, it doesn't seem quite right to buy a PS3~ Idiotic? Perhaps not if that's one's taste.
I have a 20GB version PS3 I purchased last summer. I recently upgraded the hard drive to 120GB and turned the old 20GB into a portable drive. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. The machine is virtually silent and I've never run into overheating problems - two problems I'm told plague the 360. As an HDTV owner the inclusion of a blu-ray drive is great - not to mention the PS3 is now profile 2.0 compadibility - I think the only blu-ray player on the market that is. It also does excellent upscaling of regular DVDs.
The PS3 is also completly region free for PS3 games unlike the 360 and Wii. For me, this is quite important! Plus the US and Japan share the same blu-ray region. I've not dabbled in online play at all yet so I can't really comment on it.

Wait a minute- You're being careful about spending money but you preordered a game for a system you don't have? That doesn't make any sense! I think you can safely assume there won't be a MGS4 shortage when you eventually do buy a PS3.
