Watch out for WOW mount account stealing spam

Post by Hobie-wan »

Just got this bullshit in my inbox. I'm sure most of you are smart enough to know it is crap, but maybe inform any friends playing WOW to not fall for it.

You are receiving this e-mail because *bullshit email address* has purchased a World of Warcraft® Mount: Winged Guardian for you as a gift from the Blizzard Store!

World of Warcraft® Mount: Winged Guardian Pet Key: 4110078209775401765375598

To use this key to activate the World of Warcraft® Mount: Winged Guardian, simply follow these instructions:

1. Create a Battle.net account (or if you already have one, log in) at *bullshit address link*
2. Verify your e-mail address. For existing account holders, click the 'verify this e-mail address' link in the main Account Management page and follow the steps. For new accounts, check your e-mail account immediately after account creation for a verification e-mail. Click the link in this e-mail to verify your e-mail address.
3. Return to the Battle.net account management page, then click on [Item Code Redemption].
4. Enter the above Pet Key in the [Item Redemption Code] field.
5. Once you have successfully redeemed this code, you will be able to use the World of Warcraft® Mount: Winged Guardian.

We strongly recommend you keep this e-mail on file for future reference. If you have any questions about this gift or about your Battle.net account, please contact our Sales, Billing & Account Services team at:

Phone: 1-800-592-5499
E-mail: [email protected]

Live phone support is available seven days a week, 8:00AM - 8:00PM Pacific Time.

Enjoy!

Blizzard Entertainment

Riiiiiiiight.

The reason I bothered to bring this up is that someone actually managed to run a spell checker and form some actual sentences for once.

I get at least 3 of these e-mails a day if not more.

Ah. I haven't played WoW for years so it was the first I'd seen of it.

I stopped playing about 2-3 years ago. Find it extremely funny I get so many e-mails attempting to phish my account information when I haven't played for so long.

Why on earth are your emails being published by Blizzard?

They probably aren't, WoW is a popular game. Phishers just fire at big targets hoping something will stick. There are enough people playing WoW that some of their harvested emails are bound to be WoW players. Just like I get bank phishing spam though I've never held an account with a major bank chain.
