I think I've only opened up two disputes that I recall - one as a buyer and other as a seller.
As the seller I had sold a very old IBM Thinkpad laptop. Some guy bought it, never recieved payment, no communication or anything. Filed a dispute with e-bay and eventually got my fees back. Re-listed it and sold it again later (at a higher price to) without issue. This was a guy with high feedback and had been on e-bay a long time - but apparently around the same time he bought from me he also bought from a few others and never paid. Seemed rather strange.
As a buyer I had purchased a 32x system complete in the box along with like 12 32x games back in October of 2007. Guy sold tons of toys and games and had excellent feedback. After I paid I got an e-mail from him saying his father is in hospital on a breathing machine and he might be a little late in sending the package. I said that was fine, I didn't need it for awhile anyhow. Waited about 3 weeks - nothing else from him so I sent an e-mail asking when I should be expecting the package. Wait another week - no reply. Another e-mail, no reply. So I file a dispute with e-bay - he finally wakes up and gets it sent out very quickly. Apparently I wasn't the only one he was ignoring cause apparently PayPal had locked his account. As much as I can appreciate situations like that, if your running a buisness you really need to stay on top of things - surely its not that hard to go to a post office!
Anybody ever have to open an eBay dispute?

Well, after 17 days of the PayPal dispute went by without any communication from the seller, I decided to escalate it to a claim. At this point, it's been nearly two months since I ordered the product, and there's been no communication from the seller whatsoever. I really just want my forty bucks back.

Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.
I've never had to open a dispute, but once I bought a game and a couple of weeks passed with nothing. I sent the seller messages but no response. Finally, I requested the seller's information and rang the guys number. A woman answered the phone and I asked to speak to the contact name in the details, she sounded totally confused and called her son down. Whilst talking to the guy I heard his mam yelling stuff in the background like, "You'd better not have used my credit card!".
I felt quite bad for the kid getting him in trouble, especially since he probably just forgot about it as the item arrived the next morning. I don't think he realised that people that buy from you can request a phone number.
