Raiden Project?

Edit: Yeah, as far as I can find, RP is the first to do it, being a launch title on the ps1. Its actually got some really nice options for being one of the first "arcade-true" ports.

Good question. I've yet to find anything pre-32 bit era that supports TATE...

So, if that's truly the case then it shouldn't be *too* hard to figure out by looking at the release dates of Saturn/PS1 TATE shmups...

The jp version of Raiden Project has the earliest release date of those if I'm not mistaken, and has TATE with no need for codes.

Now I am curious!
Most of the earlier Arcade games, Pacman for example have a taller vertical screen vs narrow width screen. I wonder not only the SHMUPs, but what other types of games were made as a "TATE" rotate option on home consoles? I know there was a Pacman on the C64 that did this.

Thanks :) i was just super curious. I find TATE mode a very awesome option to have... and i seem to be on a shmup shopping binge as of recent ;) Oh! by the way "dunpeal2064" after recommending "Sonic Wings Special" on account of my love for Aero Fighters as it was the first shmup to leave an impression on me, i finally snagged a copy for 20 bucks! it even came with mini disc (perhaps a soundtrack???)

I think Soldier Blade and Star Parodier on Turbo/PCE have an option for "arcade" screen mode where it compresses the screen giving an tate effect. Not a true screen rotate but it does pre-date Radien Triad.
