Watched Frankenstein and Freaks earlier this week on TCM. Frankenstein is always fun and I hadn't seen Freaks before. I'd heard mixed reviews about Freaks, but to my surprise I found it rather entertaining. I was also surprised how well all the 'freaks' were portrayed right up until the end. It was surprisingly sensitive.

And while I liked Freaks, She Freak, which I watched last night on TCM, was an absolute mess. It was remarkably similar in plot to Freaks (even ended the same way :? ), but was a pale comparison. They put the move in the Drama/Horror genre, but all I felt throughout the film was confusion. I could have done a better job editing that movie with a VCR. The plot was painfully slow and didn't pick up until the last half-hour and the acting was cringe-worthy. When it was over my only reaction was "Really?" :|

What's Your Number?

It's definitely in the top 5 of worst movies of 2011, and is surely in the top 3 of worst romcoms of all time. The movie has a bunch of great talent, but doesn't use it wisely, or at all in some stretches of the film. It takes advantage of every romcom cliche imaginable, and not once improves on them. I'd say it's a paint by numbers movie, that would imply the movie has some direction.

I watched Hobgoblins, the MST3K version. So very hilarious. I'd say the most awful part of the movie was how that army dude threw himself on a grenade, and was completely covered in fire, then later he shows up again with just a cut on his shoulder.

I really liked Freaks, too bad that in the 30's everyone got offended by everything and instead of liking the film (It's an extremely good movie) they decided to destroy it along with Tod Browning's career. Something similar happened with Peeping Tom as well.

NICE! Hobgoblins is hilarious. I've seen both -- the real movie and the MST3K version. Such an overlooked piece of shit. :)

lol that it is. "I hear the old man callin' me - 'Keviiiin...'"

I've actually never seen the original NonMST version, but I did see it for sale at Best Buy once and almost picked it up. Almost.

HORRIBLE BOSSES

Watched this last night with the wife and it was pretty funny. Not as funny as I had hoped, and it's not a DVD buy, but it's at least worth a rental. Charlie Day cannot seem to play any other character than Charlie Kelly from Always Sunny - and I really don't mind, because he's awesome. I'm also not usually a fan of Jason Sudeikis, but he was pretty hilarious in the movie. Jason Bateman was.... Jason Bateman. Awesome.

Colin Ferrell was hilarious in the movie. I wish he was in it more than he was, but he was really funny. Not In Bruges level funny, but still pretty funny. Kevin Spacey almost played the same character from Swimming with Sharks, which was pretty cool.

And Jamie Foxx's bit part was awesome too. I thought it was pretty entertaining.

Plus, this scene:

And to hear Jennifer Aniston talk like she does in the movie - definitely watchable. :)

I saw Moneyball last night and loved it. I'm usually not a big fan of sports movies due to how sappy they can be so I liked how this focused on something other than a miraculous victory or heartbreaking loss.

I agree, almost. It's not a horrible film, but by no means is it good. I wouldn't waste 1.5 hours on it, and wouldn't recommend anyone to rent it. Maybe there's just something about the movie that I don't "get". I don't relate to it all, as although the talent is great, the acting is way too over the top for me. Not that it is all dick jokes and toilet humor, it just doesn't mesh with the characters.

It's a difficult year for comedies this year though. BRIDESMAIDS certainly set the bar, and the only other really funny movies are animated movies such as Kung Fu Panda 2. Not saying there aren't some great and funny moments in movies this year (50/50 has some special moments that will make ya laugh and cry at the same time) but as far as movies described as "comedies", it hasn't been the best year.
