I like the scrolling! Makes for unique gameplay every time you play it. Game is tough, though.
Recently bought Thunderforce II but so far having a hard time getting passed the first level, haha.. I don't like the top down levels.. but want to check out the more traditional horizontal levels. will have to get back to that soon.
So it was made for the Pal MD/Genesis, or is that an NTSC-J release?

TFII was also originally Sharp X68000 and that version looks a lot better. youtube it sometime or something, the overhead stages look a lot more tolerable. I haven't gotten that far into TFII myself since I hate those stages in the Genesis version, heh.
valgalder: I think the real way to play TFIII is to play on Extreme/Insane, whatever the hardest difficulty is. For all the Thunder Force games, hold A/B/C then press start at the main menu for extra options. I think TFIII is more fun on the highest difficulty and not too brutal either, but TFIV on the other hand is pretty insane and different. Miniboss placement is different, enemies have more attack patterns, it actually changes a lot.
