Thanks man.

My parents are being oddballs about being called "Grandmother and Grandfather" which I think is insane. They want nicknames, which my Sister and I think is dumb. We grew up in Chicago, and after moving to the South one of the biggest irritations about the change of culture is that grandparents have the dumbest nicknames ever, such as mee-ma, pee-pa, nee-nee, etc. Your the fucking Grandparents, own that shit.

Until my parents smell the coffee and agree that they're not too young (they're almost in their 70's for christ sake) to be grandparents, I'm going as "Uncle motherfucking Batman".

And while I'm thinking about it, I wonder which Uncle came up with the game "Uncle". That guy must have been an asshole or his nephews were just lousy jerks who deserved having their fingers pulled back to their wrists.
Heh that's true! Well congratulations, I loved becoming an Uncle for the first time and love being a dad even more! Best part about being an Uncle is you can wind em up and then send em home! :P

I'm thinking about switching majors. It's only my Sophomore year and I declared English Lit as my major at the end of my Freshman year. When I picked it - it sort of felt like a placeholder because I wasn't really sure what else to take. All I knew was that I did well in English and English LIt. in High School.

But now after starting Japanese I'm thinking of majoring in Linguistics instead (with a minor in Japanese possibly). I feel like it just makes more sense. I've always been more interested in language, speaking, and how languages came to be. I like literature and I can analyze it - but it's much more of a chore to me now.

And after getting back the latest grade on my Critical Reading essay - I'm definitely leaning towards changing the major.

Do what you feel is right, but look into the job market and get some idea of what's available as well. I wish I would have.

Important question: How long do you plan on being in school? BA? Masters?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Definitely a BA. I'm considering a Masters of Arts in teaching.

If you do switch your major to linguistics, you'll want to at least try for your masters. Linguistics is kinda like psychology or philosophy - a four year degree just doesn't have a high enough rate of return.

I suggest the blended approach: Minor in a language if you want to (though Japanese isn't the most marketable skill out there these days) but keep your major something that is more likely to land you a job when school is over.

I've looked into schools that offer Japanese and I always see Japanese tied with Business.

That's a Business major w/Japanese minor.

Yeah but I wonder if that's not just a hold out on the catalog from the late 90's. If I was looking to learn a foreign language for the first time, these days I'd look at Chinese-Mandarin, Persian-Farsi, or German. Those are the languages that are going to be competing with English to control the discourse for the next few decades.

I've heard that a lot too. But I'm mainly interested in teaching English as a second language (in Japan, hence the minor) - and I figured Linguistics would probably make more sense for that than English Lit.

I know I could at least teach in Japan for about a year with just a regular college degree. The linguistics degree might help me stay there longer or get an ESL job back in the states.
