Windows 8

Post by fastbilly1 »

Anyone else playing with the developers version?
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

I had it in a sandbox for a while and it worked really well. It is like Windows 7 in a smaller footprint and has the optional Metro UI. The more I play with it, the more I like it. That and I think it will make a dynamite HTPC OS if you use a Wiimote for controls.

What made me like it even more was that last night I was poking through some directories I hadnt looked at and found a program called windows to go. Which for those who dont keep up on tech news (which obviously I do not), is simply a Windows 8 livecd for a 32gig+ jumpdrive. Thats right, an toned down version of the OS, installed on a jumpdrive that you carry in your pocket. For the linux aficionados this isnt a big deal, they have been doing this for years, but for Microsoft to put this option out there well portable pc gaming just got a nice boost. Ive been using portable apps (http://portableapps.com/) for sometime, and this is just the next logical step. I ended up trashing my sandbox of win8 last night, so I will hopefully reinstall it tonight and get to give this a go. We are going to see how well my EEE900 can handle Win8...

And for those who dont think this is that cool, imagine this. You have four thumbdrives with windows to go installs on them. You give them to you parents and they run one into the ground with malware. Well they just hold onto the infected drive, so you can pull data from it, plug in a new one, and they are off to the races again. I fully plan on doing this with my parents. Run two two terabyte drives on the box for their pictures, documents, and music, but all OS functions are on a jumpdrive that they can just change out and I can replace every month when I visit.

And yes, that is running natively on a Mac, from a jumpdrive.

Is it really gonna be called Windows 8? Or is that just a working title?

I'll download the Beta when it's available.

Windows 8 also has a "return to stock" option that leaves data in place. So hopefully that'll be a viable way for people to fix their own malware problems (but probably not, considering how many block .exes from running).

Im looking forward to Windows 8 for a tablet with a full OS. IPad is too limited for my tastes. Windows 8 will lead to tablets that can be true laptop replacements.

If history is anything to go by, Windows 8 will be shit and Windows 9 will be good. I just started using Windows 7 this year after holding on to XP for as long as I could. I still prefer XP, but I have to use Windows 7 so I can have more RAM. (>_<)

Everytime I open Winamp, it asks me for permission. It's so fucking annoying. I even set the program to run as administrator but it still asks me.

Then you either don't have your options set right or you installed Winamp in a funny way.

You could disable UAC or set an exception for it: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/135472- ... uac-part2/
It should be easier, but the option is there. Personally I have the UAC set at low.

But Inazuma needs to bitch about everything. Providing simple solutions just isn't right! Just isn't right, man. *sigh*

your right there is an easier way, when you open a software and screen blinks, their should be txt box on bottom. Expand that box and go change the settings to lowest.

@ Inazuma - You do have a lot of insight, but no need for all the cursing to get a point across. I do agree that Win 8 will be the beta of a more stable fix later. That said, here is a look at Windows history.

Windows 3.1 < Windows 3.11 Workgroups

Windows 95 < Windows 98

Windows Millennium < Windows XP

Windows Vista < Windows 7

Windows 8 < ?
