The Aakash was created so everyone in India could use a computer. The reason that it is super underpowered is so it can be powered off of a solar cell. Think of it less like a ipad, more as India taking the One Laptop Per Child idea internally.

I think it is a great idea and wish them the best of luck.

People did real work on computers with less power than an MP3 player 20 years ago. There's no such thing as an underpowered computer, only spoiled users.

To a degree. But programs and OSes keep requiring more and more resources.

There's no reason that has to be the case. The proliferation of a low resource platform will encourage leaner code.
We are prepared to live in the plain and die in the plain!

And being that it runs Android 2.2, there is extensive documentation on programing for it.
