Did you ever buy a game solely for its box art?

Re: Did you ever buy a game solely for its box art?
All the time, as a kid. I'd either buy the game based on the box, or rent it based on the box. I wanted to play RPGs so bad after being addicted to Crystalis and Zelda (yeah, I know) played at a friend's house and watching another friend play Final Fantasy (why do you keep walking in circles, LOL?). But my family got a Genesis, making it tough to get my RPG groove on. The first game I owned for it was Fatal Labyrinth (ugh), bought solely because of the box cover (I didn't even see the back of the box, it was a Christmas present my dad purchased with the system after I pointed it out at the store). Somehow, the second game I owned was Phantasy Star II, thank the heavens, even tho the box art for it looks nearly as bad as Mega Man's. I mean, what is up with this horrible rendition of Rolf and Nei?

Another game whose box art really turned me off (and kept me from buying it for awhile) was Final Fantasy III (and I guess II as well). Could anyone even tell this was an rpg?

The back is just as bad. And yeah, I know, I watched a friend play the first game, but I wasn't sure at that point that the title of the game I'd watched him play was Final Fantasy and not... well, who knows what? Glad I finally picked that game up tho, but man. If they'd stuck w/ Amano's box art from the Japanese release it would have been a no-brainer. I wouldn't have cared what kind of game it even was with a box like that.

I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

Yeah I'm gonna be honest, the SNES covers for FFII and FFIII (US) really aren't that great, lol.

Even back as a kid I generally did my research before buying or asking my parents for a game. However, recently when I finally got a DS, I picked up a few RPGs solely off box art. I sometime will buy random games for the PS2 as well, I will see a few cheap ones in gamestop that look promising and try them out.

Of course when I was a kid I always bought NES and Genesis games based on the box. We didn't have the Internet and I didn't get any of the magazines and I was a kid so I didn't know any better and wanted whatever looked awesome. Sometimes this tactic worked and sometimes it didn't. Luckily I usually rented games more than buying them back then
Today I can't say I do this very often since games can be quite the investment and I have the Internet. Sometimes I still window shop for some DS games since they're not too expensive. Recently I bought Solatorobo because I thought it looked like Tail Concerto. Then I got home and found out it was actually a sequel to Tail Concerto and I was pretty happy.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Have I ever purchased a game because of the box art? Oh my, yes. I still enjoy recalling the first time I saw a copy of Phalanx for the SNES on a store shelf....

I actually think that box art gives it an epic look to it.mobiusclimber wrote:All the time, as a kid. I'd either buy the game based on the box, or rent it based on the box. You should have seen what SEGA did to Phantasy Star, Valis and Guardian Heroes.Xeogred wrote:Yeah I'm gonna be honest, the SNES covers for FFII and FFIII (US) really aren't that great, lol.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
