Is the remake really good? I love the original and it's creepy, dark atmosphere so I hope they kept that in the remake.
Awesome! Another horror fan on here!

As for the remake, I personally liked it and I was worried that it was going to suck. It's not like the original unfortunately but it's a good movie in it's own right while borrowing elements from the original. I'd say it's a little more twisted than the original if anything. I don't want to give anything away for you though. Check it out. 8)
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

I'll contribute my two cents as to why I did not care for Chasing Amy. The dialogue is by turns over-the top (Alyssa's "zomg, how dare you try to change my sexuality!" speech in the middle of a rainstorm) and trite ("if you're gay, do you stare at yourself in the mirror all day?").

For most of the movie, the characters engage in a bunch of discussions regarding the menutiae of sexuality and comic books. While someone like Seinfeld is talented enough to pull off humor from this kind of thing while keeping it subtle, Kevin Smith just relies too much on shock value to drive his humor (is it okay for Banky to call Alyssa a dyke? oh my god, they did not just say "dyke" in a movie!") This is the movie equivalent of that idiot you went to middle school with who thinks yelling "cunt" out loud qualifies as high comedy.

I find the entire conflict kind of contrived. I don't understand see why someone as sexually experienced as Alyssa views a traditional heterosexual relationship as some kind of no fly zone. That's as societally safe a relationship as one can get. Also, Holden was apparently just born yesterday because he's naive enough to think that he was the first man Alyssa had been with sexually, and then gets all boo-hoo butthurt when he finds out he isn't. Real compelling drama here, folks.

And then - spoiler warning - Holden suggests that the best way to resolve all of their issues (Holden's resentment of Alyssa's sexual history, Banky's unrequited homosexual love for Holden) is to have a three-way. A friggin' three-way. Again, this isn't a solution that a sane person would come up with, and I again have to conclude it was written for shock value.

So there you have it - characters with even less depth than the cast of "Friends," completely incredulous psychological characterization, and dialogue that's either over-the-top or inane. This is perhaps the one "romance" film that's even worse than "Pretty Woman."

yeah the remake is barely a remake. That's why the titles are different (Black Christmas vs Black X-Mas). They're very different movies with very different atmospheres. But I love love love the new one. First off, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Second, like Evildeadman said, it's seriously twisted. Just a crazy over-the-top slasher that's fun and sick and not trying to be much more. Plus, the music rules.

I haven't seen the last third of the original Black Christmas, but I've seen the remake, and from what I've seen, the "remake" is really just an unrelated movie (continuity-wise, I mean) that happens to have the same name.

And speaking of horror:

SCREAM4!

Awesome! Can't wait until Scream 5! Oh, and not to spoil anything, but there's a scene that totally made me remember the late David Carradine's Kill Bill line, "This is me at my most... masochistic."

I'm working on a screenplay and I need some inspiration for a couple scenes. I'm looking for movies that contain the following:

A relatable love story. Two characters meet, fall in love, etc. Something somewhat realistic, not any 1940s "kiss me, kiss me one last time darling" bs. The movie doesn't need to be realistic though, i.e. Eternal Sunshine.

A movie or scene involving two old friends/colleagues who've had a falling out and are brought together for some reason. A general example would be the Professor X/Magneto relationship in X-men 1 and 2. Come to think of it, that's really close to what I'm doing, I have to avoid treading to close too that.

time to clear out some older reviews before I start posting thoughts on the horror films I have been watching this month...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 (2010) – This was a solid improvement over the generally boring Half Blood Prince, though it suffers from only being part of a story and failing to have a plot that does much more than leave you wondering what will happen in Part 2. This film excels at location shooting that really captures environments in a remarkable way, adding a sense of gravity to many of the scenes. The actors long ago settled into these roles and play them convincingly and with ease, and the effects are solid. Not much more to say on this one…
Grade: 3.5/5

Desperado (1995) – I hadn’t watched this film in years, but I always thought that its opening scenes are some of the best work that Rodriguez has done. My repeat viewing confirmed that belief, and the film is just a fun ride from beginning to end (though the end falls a bit flat and rushed). It is less technically impressive than El Mariachi but infinitely more entertaining than the plodding Once Upon a Time in Mexico . This is probably still one of the all time best films about Mexico, and should be in any conversation about the best action films of the 90s.
Grade: 4/5

Thor (2011) – Having little to no previous knowledge of Thor, I was highly skeptical going into this film. The trailers all played up the “fish out of water” angle of the film and featured clips of the obvious humor, so I expected something along the lines of The Fantastic Four films or even the horrible Spider Man 3…so I was pleasantly surprised to find a film that held my attention, had enough effects and action scenes to cover up the horrible acting, and had much sharper writing than what I had expected. In the end, Thor is a good, not great, comic book film – it holds its own with many other films in the genre from the past decade or so. The standout here is the design and effects work in the scenes that don’t take place on Earth – they are probably some of the most compelling CGI worlds I have seen. Worth a look for genre fans.
Grade: 3/5

Transformers : Dark of the Moon (2011) – Once again, I let hearsay get me interested in a Transformers film. I had heard arguments that it is the best of the three – it is not. I had heard arguments that Shia is more convincing – he is not. And I heard arguments that it has impressive visuals – it does not: like the rest of the series, the design and animation are too cluttered and the characters all look too similar. Essentially this is easily just as bad as Transformers 2 (which was just marginally worse than the already horrible Transformers 1), though there is a better female lead and less offensively stereotyped bots. On the other hand, it is too long and I had to fight to stay awake during the climactic (and too long) final battle. I really hope Michael Bay is done shitting all over this series, as I’d like to see the IP taken up by a competent director, complete with a redesign of the characters, the world, etc. Avoid.
