Top loader NES types

Post by vlame »

there is some good info here :http://www.game-tech.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.p ... STopLoader

He mentions a nes-101 with a nintendo multi out that totally replaces the RF plug.

just wondering if any of you guys have one of these, since i think that would be a good alt to modding one.

The NES-101's (commonly called "top loaders") that have the multi-video out are exceptionally rare.

When Nintendo of America decided to sell a North American version of the Japanese HFC-101 (commonly called the "AV Famicom") they simplified the hardware in order to make it cheaper to produce, which meant removing the DB-9 expansion port, cartridge audio expansion support, and most significantly of all, removing composite video support, which renders NES toploaders RF only.

At the time, Nintendo was a massive juggernaut that had their own repair centers spread across North America. In the event that a purchased NES-001 needed to be sent in for repairs or simply if the customer complained about the RF signal quality enough, Nintendo would replace their systems with versions that have the Multi Video Out connector like the AV Famicom does.

So to restate that, the Multi Video Out NES Toploaders were only ever available through Nintendo repair centers and were never commercially sold. There are only an estimated ~2000-3000 of them in existence.

It is possible to heavily modify an NES Top Loader to use a salvaged Multi Video Out connector from an SNES or AV Famicom, so be careful if you're in the market and see one for anywhere remotely close to a decent price.

I have a modified NES Top Loader that uses standard male to male AV cables, so you'd be best to look for those if you must have a top loading NES. The Japanese version comes highly recommended.

@Satoshi Matrix: You're absolutely correct, though the redesigns end in 101, the originals end in 001 (much like other Nintendo consoles, such as the GBA-SP).

And there's apparently a small rumor, largely unsubstantiated, that they may have been sold towards the end of its lifespan, though like you said there's so few of them, it's nearly impossible to be sure.
My Want List!

Consoles: Sega Master System, NES Toploader, Genesis/32X, Sega CDX, SNES, 3DO FZ-1, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox Halo Edition, Wii, PS3
Handhelds: Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, Neo Geo Pocket Color, GBC (Atomic Purple, Pokemon Edition), GBA (Pink OG, Silver SP, Spongebob SP+), DS (Phat, iXL), 3DS, PSP (1000, Go)
