This was news to me. I was still in the mindset that bringing down the speed could fix most problems. Going up allowed me to burn a couple discs that I had no idea why they weren't working. Thanks for the new-found knowledge!irixith wrote:Try writing the images with ImgBurn, or pirate/buy DiscJuggler. It's probably writing your discs too slowly.
Once upon a blue moon, there used to be some validity to burning things at insane speeds, like 1x, 2x, 4x. These days, burners and discs perform very poorly at those speeds. Keep your minimum burn speed to 8x if you feel you must go slower, but there really is no point in this day and age.
DC burning help?

Re: Problem with DiscJuggler
hmm. Still having issues. And I've wasted like 6 CDR's now. I feel like *some* CDI's won't work when I burn them in IMGBurn, but work fine when I burn with DiscJuggler. And then *some* it's the other way around. No rhyme or reason. Just super annoying.
I'm curious what program and what settings most of y'all use to burn yr DC games?

Re: DC burning help?
Well I never heard of the CDI driver that works with ImgBurn before now, so if you wanna know how I burn my DC games, just check the guide I wrote. The way I've burned about half my DC games is to mount the image in a virtual drive and use ImgBurn to rip it to BIN/CUE, then burn the BIN/CUE using ImgBurn. The other half I just burn the CDI directly using Boot Dreams. I have NEVER made one coaster.

I realize that having to rip the CDI to another format might seem annoying because it takes extra time, but considering that it has worked 100% from me, you wont be wasting your time burning coasters. Not to mention the CD-R's you're wasting.
Noise, maybe you said and I missed it, but what brand CD-R's are you using? Also, did you see my post in this thread about the DCRES Dreamcast images? They are far superior to most other Dreamcast images. I think there's another guy out there making images of this quality, but I can never remember his name.

read this, i had some problems also and it all came down to burning the discs too fast and having to use a old CD Burner, and burning at the slowest possible speed, im 110% sure its your burner.noiseredux wrote: EDIT:

I'll check out BootDreams, and if that doesn't work well enough then I'll try yr bin/cue method. I am aware of Tux's releases, though most of what I'm burning now is homebrew and emulators rather than official releases. As far as CDR's, I was using my last stack of Memorex, but those are gone. I just picked up a pack of 100 Sony's from Staples on sale for $18.
Re: DC burning help?
To be honest you are using cheap media.
The media will work for a few days and then the DC will not read it.
You are going to kill your laser if you keep using it.
Get VERBATIM DataLifePlus [AZO] make sure it has the AZO logo. They are Dark Blue recording surface.
Once you try out, you will never buy any other brand.

Re: DC burning help?
Homebrew games that are games like Beats of Rage and are CDI's should work alright. I've had some troubles with other Dreamcast homebrew stuff before though. Like a CDI I downloaded that was Street Hopes (NeoGeo CD game) setup to run on the emulator for Dreamcast. It just didn't work. It was burned fine, but the image was bad. Emulators can be tricky, too. If you download a prebuilt CDI, it should be alright, but if you're building the image yourself, it could be possible that you're not making it correctly.noiseredux wrote:I'll check out BootDreams, and if that doesn't work well enough then I'll try yr bin/cue method. Yeah, Memorex are shit. At the very best, you'll burn it and it'll work fine, but that disc will die months or years later. I've used Sony many times with out any problems.jinn wrote:To be honest you are using cheap media.

Verbatim is great, but apparently the AZO line doesn't exist any more. I read that you can still find them from some retailers, but I haven't spotted them yet. I've burned DVDs using Verbatim, and they've been great.

Re: DC burning help?
well I was just using up whatever CDR's I had laying around (memorex). Anyway, just burned a disc using BootDreams on the Sony CDR's and it worked great. Yes, I am using cheap media. That's kind of the goal. I'm trying to get my game on while not spending a lot of $ for a while. So Dreamcast + gigantic homebrew library = good solution.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on BootDreams, Zigs. Worked great!
