I had gotten a pretty decent 3do bundle about a year ago, thinking it would be sweet to have such an obscure system and a good amount of games (I think i got 10 with it). Let me tell you, I never played so many games for so little time. Almost everything had FMV and was cheesy as hell. I even had a couple of the "good titles" such as Road Rash and didnt care for it at all. I think the most action it got was when my little sister played the crap out of Primal Rage.
After the novelty wore off I sat collecting dust, and I had to let it go to someone who would appreciate it more than I. The build quality was very nice though, it was the first thing I noticed when I unpacked it.
Is the 3DO worth getting/opinions of console.

Personally, I like the FZ-1 because when I think 3DO, that's what comes to mind. It was the only model I ever saw in person back when it was new. It's what I set out to get when I bought one, but the decision wasn't really objective (well, neither was the decision to get a 3DO, it was pretty much entirely "I couldn't get one as a kid").ATARI800XLfan wrote:What is a fair price for a 3DO? Also which version is best. I personally like the Look of the Goldstar but I have heard it has problems with some games?
Technically speaking, the FZ-10 is better - it has a memory manager integrated into the system (the FZ-1 needs a demo disc for it). It's also a top loader. One less motorized function to break.
The Goldstar is known to have issues with some games, but it's generally fine. A friend of mine down the street that collects games too has one.

Now imagine playing it for the Turbo Grafix - where you have to use the Start button to get at least three buttons. Madden has to use the Start button as well (on the TG16).MrPopo wrote:It's terrible. You essentially pick the punch or kick you never use and assign it to Start, since you'll never be hitting it in the match. But like I said, it's technically fully playable.Balasubbie wrote:Really? How d'you pause it? Has anyone played it this way? Is it alright?MrPopo wrote: So it's technically fully playable with the standard controller.

At least the 6-button pads on it (PCE/TG-16) are easy to find and affordable.retrosportsgamer wrote:Now imagine playing it for the Turbo Grafix - where you have to use the Start button to get at least three buttons. Madden has to use the Start button as well (on the TG16).
Funny, nobody has mentioned the other version of the 3DO.
There is the:
Panasonic FZ-1 (my favourite)
Panasonic FZ-10 (probably the most common, and still solid overall)
Goldstar Interactive Multiplayer (the least wanted, as it seems to have trouble with CD-Rs)
Sanyo T.R.Y. (apparently good and reliable, but it is Japan-only)
The 3DO is not really an "essential" retro system like the NES, Genesis, SNES or even TG-16/PC Engine (for me this is absolutely essential, but I understand that it is not for everyone for some strange reason I do not understand*). It is really more of a novelty system. Most of the good games are available on other systems. Yes, often the best version is on the 3DO, but the differences are marginal. The 3DO is something you get to show off to your friends who don't have one, or to fulfill your fantasy of having every console that you wanted back in the day when you couldn't afford them all.
*that sentence made sense to me!

Re: Is the 3DO worth getting/opinions of console.
Are there any games actually worth owning and playing?
I know all the full motion video was cool and cutting edge at the time, but that crap has just aged horribly and I have zero interest in replaying all that cheesy crap.
Are there any "real" games that are actually good and worth playing? Any time I hear people talk about the 3DO, they only talk about FMV games and frankly those are boring and lame, and they werent even that cool back in the day.

Road Rash, but that had a better version on the Saturn, Need for Speed (which had a better version on PC), Wing Commander 3 (better version on PC), Syndicate (better version on PC), Quarantine (better version on PC), Street Fighter 2 (better on several other platforms), ...see where this is going.Para wrote:Are there any games actually worth owning and playing?

It does have the best version of Star Control 2, with lots of voice acting, but, the PC version is free and converted for modern computers. http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
It also has the best version of MegaRace.
Also, Ballz3D...
Older. Not wiser.

Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo was arcade perfect on the 3DO. How do you get better than that?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Road Rash, but that had a better version on the Saturn, Need for Speed (which had a better version on PC), Wing Commander 3 (better version on PC), Syndicate (better version on PC), Quarantine (better version on PC), Street Fighter 2 (better on several other platforms), ...see where this is going.

About saying that Road Rash is better on the Saturn... that is a matter of personal opinion. From what I know, the backgrounds are better quality on the 3DO, the draw distance/fade in is better on the 3DO, and the sound quality is slightly better on the 3DO. The frame rate is better on the Saturn. Also, the collision detection on the Saturn for attacking guys is just terrible. The 3DO is much more forgiving here.
As for games that have been ported to PC, that is true. Most of them are better on PC. That's usually the case with any game. However, some people enjoy games on consoles more than on PC.
The Need for Speed on the PC, Saturn and PS1 is a sequel/expansion on the 3DO version. They have a more arcade-style feel (faster, looser handling), and a couple of closed circuit tracks added on. It's more a matter of preference here again.
For other multi-platform games, I cannot think of a single game I prefer on a non-3DO console.
For those who think the 3DO is just FMV games, there are plenty of regular action games on the system. I'm too lazy to list them all here, but just do a google search of "best 3DO games." You'll find plenty
Of course, overall, the differences between the games on multiple systems are pretty minor overall (except the lack of a save feature on PS1/Sat Gex is annoying).

I am not really interested in any of these games for some reason. I will probably never get a 3DO

Re: Is the 3DO worth getting/opinions of console.
Samurai Shodown on 3DO is nice because it isn't just a port, they actually spend time re-coding it to optimize the 3DO. Some actually prefer this version to the Neo Geo. The Need for Speed and Road Rash are must-haves IMO, but, I guess, if you aren't into older racers then you wouldn't go for them. Of course, the 3DO really is not for everyone. It probably has the best console version of Flashback and Another World/Out of this World. Soccer Kid really is a great platformer. I really like Gex, and the 3DO has the best version due to the save game feature.Para wrote:http://www.retro-sanctuary.com/TOP%2040 ... S%204.html

Not sure if this thread had anything to do with it, but we've had a rental and 2 purchases of 3DO games today. Before today there was about 0% activity with them, so we have to assume something on the web jumpstarted the 3DO.
We still have a few of the one you all mentioned available. Gex, Hell, Alone in the Dark 1+2, Need for speed, Soccer kid
AND....
BALLZ director's cut!

The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.
