And it's over.. Monster AI/HP/numbers are frustrating and it's unfortunate that encounters with human enemies are few and far between. I read that it's based on a book but it's definitely not Stalker-level quality.
And that concludes my FPS adventures for September. Next week I'll dabble with Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

The funny thing on me bashing Metro is that I have had a hard time getting into Stalker as well. And it really feels like the kind of FPS I'd love... open world, character interaction and dialogue stuff, inventories, (think Deus Ex and System Shock 2 a little here), but yeah. The shooting mechanics are just so weird. My friend also showed me the Complete 2009 mod and when I saw that, it's been hard to go back to the vanilla game, since my PC can't handle the Complete mod. But I need to get over that and try to really play it since I've owned it for years.
Think I'll give it another go this month.

I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't. I loved Metro 2033 and can't wait for the sequel.

STALKER really requires some modification to get the full effect, and it's not a very fast-paced FPS.dsheinem wrote:I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't. I loved Metro 2033 and can't wait for the sequel.

Care to elaborate? If you're talking mods... outside of Complete 2009 since my PC can't handle it, lol.Ack wrote:STALKER really requires some modification to get the full effect, and it's not a very fast-paced FPS.dsheinem wrote:I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't. Indeed. Several attempts to play the game ended at that first choke point to the next area to the north. After installing the Complete mod that fight was no longer murder and is where the fun picks up.Ack wrote:STALKER really requires some modification to get the full effect, and it's not a very fast-paced FPS.dsheinem wrote:I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't. Are you trying to play at your monitor's max res and with all the settings turned up? Knock things down a little since the Complete mod juiced the graphics, but also balanced the difficulty a bit better too.Xeogred wrote:Care to elaborate? Nope, I can't even really play the vanilla game at max (seems horribly optimized honestly). I could actually play the Complete mod pretty decently with a lot of low settings, however particle effects and stuff like fire was game over, it'd bring the game to a halt and it was just unplayable to me, lol.
My computer isn't that amazing at all or anything, though I can play Bad Company 2 on medium to high settings with high resolutions, among other games... but Stalker just seems poorly optimized I'm guessing unless your computer is a beast.

It is horridly optimized. It actually stresses your computer more than Crysis does, but since not many people have heard of it computers go through the Crysis test, not the STALKER test.

It has nothing to do with the frame rate or graphics, it has to do with the game not being fun.Ack wrote:STALKER really requires some modification to get the full effect, and it's not a very fast-paced FPS.dsheinem wrote:I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't. Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
To each their own I guess. STALKER ranks very highly among my all-time favourites, and I played it with an official (early) patch. If they choose to implement a better conversation system for the proper sequel it's set to get even better.dsheinem wrote:It has nothing to do with the frame rate or graphics, it has to do with the game not being fun.Ack wrote:STALKER really requires some modification to get the full effect, and it's not a very fast-paced FPS.dsheinem wrote:I've tried several times to get into STALKER and couldn't.
