When I play fps's, I usually create/save my campaign under the name "Condor" or "Dogtown." It's a trend that I started a long time ago, beginning with Medal of Honor: Frontline. I just think they're cool call signs 8)

Currently Playing: Crysis (360), Destiny demo (PS3), Roadblasters (MAME)

On Actraiser however I use "loin chop", as I like when the angel calls me "Sirloin chop".

I never change default names (never used Namingway, for example), but if I get to choose the name and no default is offered, I usually use the names of people closest to me. Often that my first name (5 letters, but I can do it in 4 if I use Greek transliteration), my middle name (4 letters), and my girlfriend's name (strangely has been 4 letters...). Names for things like campaigns or save files is usually either my first name or o.pwuaioc/opwuaioc.

I always use default names because those names are canon. If a default name isn't available, I'll pick something cool sounding. If the game is very heavy on role playing though I'll just use my own name

this actually reminds me of something somewhat related...

what was the deal with so many older rpgs only allowing names 4 or 5 characters long? It used to drive me insane when I couldn't fit my name or even a shortened version of it lol

Storage space. Remember memory was expensive then and those precious bytes to store a custom name were less important then keeping track of your gear, levels, and location. Same reason you'd always start in the same place in Zelda or at save points in older games. Either not remembering your position or only remembering save point # 5 out of 16 took less space than location X=127 Y=346.

If it is an RPG with pre-selected names, I stick with them. The only time I have changed them is in my current play-through of Earthbound. In games like Wind Waker, where you get to name the main character, I just use my real name.

I normally name my characters after myself, my friends, or girls I have crushes on.
