By the way have you guys seen what Gecko Yamori has done with some Genesis remixes? Insanely awesome stuff, here's a Super Metroid medley for starters:

Megaman X3 mixes:

Megaman 10 Dr. Wily Stage

This is the guy that did a lot of music for Streets of Rage Remake, and yeah.

Makes no difference as far as audio is concerned. But with video, adding a 32X does improve the composite video quality because the 32X has a better video encoder than the Genesis. No more vertical rainbow bars.

The Model 2 argument is bunk. I have a model 1 Genesis, with an adapter for stereo sound and I can still easily say that the Genesis on average is more harsh and tingy sounding than other systems from that era. Sonic games, however, sound amazing. Sega should have shared their secrets with the third party companies on how to use that sound chip the right way.

It's by no means bad - in fact it's quite good - but it's too tinny to complement the darkness of the game in my very humble opinion. I actually think the MMX one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5HV4CDLG28) was done better, but I still think the SNES version beats it. Incidentally, I also think the Genesis does Sonic better too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEuc0O4LGSk

But the 32x also makes colours less vibrant and everything looks duller to me with a 32x.

No it isn't. There definitely is a measurable difference. It's not just in people's heads.

BurningDoom wrote:Sonic games, however, sound amazing.

They really don't sound much different than a lot of other games on the system. Yes, they sound better than stuff like Awesome Possum, but I wouldn't say that Sonic games are the pinnacle of Genesis sound quality. There were no secrets there. Sega wasn't holding anything back from other developers. It's 100% sound engineer laziness when you have a bad-sounding Genesis game.

That certainly hasn't been my experience. Maybe some 32X's are worse than others.

Eh, no need for comparisons. The Genesis covers are just cool to hear, almost makes me wish we got Genesis ports of X-X3, of course, I absolutely can't stand the music on The Wily Wars so maybe it would've sucked anyways. lol

That's why I prefaced it with "it's quite good."

I don't remember the music on The Wily Wars being that bad, but I only played a little bit at sevin's house. What did you not like about it?

Uh, no.
http://milkcrate.com.au/_other/sega_comparisons/

And there are plenty of games with if not better then at least equal quality sound engines as the Sonic games. But I have to agree that it was a mistake on Segas part not to share their knowledge.

Okay, but you guys are saying that the reason we think the SNES and NES sound better is because we have only played Model 2 or Model 3 Genesises. I own a Model 1 with the stereo sound adapter, and the SNES and NES easily sound less tingy and less harsh on average.

I'm not arguing that the Model 2 and 3 sound worse than the Model 1.

There are many different genesis hardware revisions that look the same on the outside. So just having a model 1 or 2 or 3 doesn't mean much of anything for this. Some model 1's have bad sound and some don't.
