Where is Legend of Dragoon 2?

Post by Rawkmann »

Sony is sitting on a gold mine with this game, and still no sign of continuing the franchise. Now I know the game did have its flaws, but it appealed to both casual and hardcore gamers back in a time where that was pretty rare. Overall it was one of the better RPGs on the PS1 and so deserving of a sequel. Its all well and good to create brand new IPs but might as well create a game around already established characters and mythology with guaranteed success.

Hard to say, already there is the talk of the "Death of JRPG" in gaming circles: 1up and Game Informer did have articles about this. Right now JRPG isn't sell well in the US, heck, Nintendo isn't willing to take a risk for either Xenoblade or the Last Story.

Keep in mind Sony does have IP on several JRPGs, but is worth it for them to produce one right now which could do poorly in sales - business analyst thinks at least 400,000 copies needs to be sold for a "moderate" budget game.

You'd think Sony would at least release Legend of Dragoon as a PSone classic as that's one I'd definitely pick up.

I still think Sony underestimates the mass market appeal of this IP. Still, gaming is so different now than it was when the first one hit. As long as they gave it some good marketing it would do well.

I think RPGs could make a comeback. Are there any real statistics about market change, or is it just what's being peddled? Just today I heard FFIV in a game store, looked around and some kid, couldn't be more than 12, was playing it on his DS.

Just like the classic side scroller made a come back this gen, I believe the JRPG will probably be revived one day. And when that happens, Legend of Dragoon 2 will probably happen for the very reasons you've cited, OP.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The problem is that I see two trends coming out after PS2 faded into the dark: you got big-budget JRPG's for both PS3 and 360 with pretty graphics, and big names that had worked on past classics - so far only a few can be consider a masterpiece; then you have low-budget or "moderate" budget games that try to capture the 8/16-bit nostalgia - Half-minute Hero, 3D Dot Hero, and indie "J"RPG like Breath of Death VII; so what is the market for the Legend of Dragoon?

I don't think Sony would want to spend millions on a JRPG title that cannot sell more than 1 million copies; they could out-source it to a creditable company and ask them to work on it, but is it worth it? Cult games do not sell well, which isn't desirable for many companies. But I do see a potential on the PS Vita, considering the Additions (to be honest, I hated it more than the Judgement Ring from Shadow Hearts) can utilize the touch screen.

Sadly (or not) JRPGs are getting moved to the handheld systems more and more. I personally don't have a problem with it because RPGs are perfect for taking around with you. Big titles like Final Fantasy will always get console releases, but these days companies aren't willing to take a risk on putting most JRPGs on a console. Developing on a handheld cost less money, time, and ultimately a smaller risk.

So the chances of Legend of Dragoon 2 are very slim. I would say we have a better chance of getting a remake of the first for VITA or 3DS than a full fledged sequel. But in the perfect candyland world, I would love to see a sequel.

I dunno, I think its a good thing they just keep it as is, you dont wanna see them spitting out sequels and ruining the game. The game is perfect. A sequel could ruin that
