Watch this for something interesting.

I had seen that before and it is amazing.

Since your Corvair was specifically a seat belt delete, I don't think that adding them would 'ruin' its original look. Apparently you can buy new belts that look like the originals would have looked. Even if you don't care about your own safety, there are people around you that do. Think of the burden your family and friends would endure if you were injured or killed and the medical bills and such.

(Obligatory "fight the ticket" remark)
(Obligatory "install a seat belt" remark)
With that out of the way...

Belt and helmet laws are of considerable benefit to drivers other than those who would not otherwise wear them. They help keep what should be an simple insurance claim from turning into a Wrongful Death suit instead.

It matters little how successfully the family of Mr. TooDumbToBikeWithHelmet would be able to sue you after he rear-ends you (his fault), sails over your car, and splatters his brains in a way a helmet would have prevented. You know it would go to court anyway.

What we need isn't a law forcing people to wear seat belts/helmets. What we need is a law absovling everyone else from responsibility should an unprotected driver get in an accident. No seat belt = no insurance claim, no lawsuits, no vehicular manslaughter charges. You should be free to take your life into your own hands, but if you do so you forfeit the other protections of society.

Why in the fuck do you not wear a seatbelt? I don't care what the law says. If you don't wear one, there is a very good chance you will get seriously injured or die if you get into a car accident. Not dying has got to be one of the most important things ever. How come you don't mind if you die?

It's really amazing how someone doesn't care at all about their fucking life, but they care so much about some stupid ticket. It's like a billion times less important than your own safety. Honestly, I am blown away. I really hope this is some kind of sick joke or something. Please don't tell me you are serious.

I would probably be dead if it weren't for seatbelts. About a year ago, I was driving down a straight road and some stupid fucker stopped his car in the road just ahead of me, sideways, blocking both lanes. I had no way to escape and I couldn't stop fast enough, so I hit him hard. Even with my seatbelt and airbag, my glasses broke from my face smashing into the airbag, and my right arm was burned and bleeding. My car was totaled.

Start wearing your fucking seatbelt, and then you can complain about stupid shit like $20 tickets.

Inazuma, go buy a motorbike.

OP, go to court and fight it. You'll win straight away and send a message to the pigs not to pull you over for that again. I do think it would be best with seatbelt (ironically one of my aunts would be dead today if she was wearing her seatbelt, but I think this is a minority of cases), but... police have no right to just make up laws on the spot. That cops needs to know his role.

That will never happen. Even if it were in place an injured person will still be helped by the fireman, police, ambulance ride and hospital. Guess who pays the bill for the public services and the hospital run when the injured can't afford the expenses?

@ Arbitern1 - Get the seat belts, required by most states even if it means retrofitting an older car. You won't win in court over this one and it is sensible to wear at least a lap belt. I have a 62 myself and concur in maintaining a classic. Go with Hobie's suggestion if you want the factory look.

To comply with the seat belt law I put two lap belts in the front seats. Lap belts don't offer the protection of shoulder belts or air bags, but its better then flying thru the windshield or wearing a steering wheel. Easy to install, a few holes drilled in the floorboard and run bolts with nuts underneath.

not wearing a seatbelt makes you a projectile and thus a risk to other passengers and anyone in a car you may collide with. laws are needed, because some people would be inconsiderate of others under the banner of "personal choice".

Yes he will. The law is very clearly on his side. He shows the documentation on his car, cites the appropriate law, and gets off. The judge might give him a small harangue that he should install seat belts but at the end of the day he's driving legally.
