TMNT: Tournament Fighters Yay or Nay?

Post by Daniel Primed »

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a jam, I am thinking of buying Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters for the SNES but I'm not really sure if it is any good. Last time I played it was back in the SNES days as a rental. I remember enjoying this game and wanted to buy a copy but I'm not sure if I just liked it because I was a kid and my gamer intuition hadn't wasn't as developed as it is now. :o

In anycase is this game worth my money? Let me hear your thoughts?

EDIT:Actually the price has doubled!! Won't be able to get it now. In anycase I am still interested and any idea on what the going rate is?

I used to have this game and it's pretty good for a licensed title. Decent fighting mechanics. I remember the boss battles being hard as hell, but I could also have been a sucky kid at the time. No idea about the going rate.

I thought it was wicked cool as a teen back in the day and it played pretty well. I still think it's a good game to have; especially visually I love it. :)

I used to own the NES version. Yes, there was an NES version. (I've been told otherwise.) Bought it from Toys-R-Us personally.

I recently bought the SNES version for about $12 and I find it very cool (yup Moz there definitely was a NES version... people who told you otherwise are idiots or very misinformed, but you and I both know that). As for the game itself the mechanics aren't stellar but I really like fighting games and the backgrounds are gorgeous (some better than SFII). IMHO if you are a fan of TMNT or more specifically the Turtles beatemups on NES and SNES I would have a go at the game!

Yeah, there are only three versions, for NES, SNES, and Genesis. Each one featured different casts, different art, different stages...in effect, all are worth owning if you're a turtles fan.

As for the SNES version, I recently picked it up. I was quite impressed with the title, it's definitely a competent fighter. Plays like a four button Street Fighter. Characters are pretty well varied, with nobody coming off as extremely cheap, though I do believe there were some balance issues amongst the turtles due to the variations in basic attacks and commands assigned to special moves. Raphael suffers particularly when compared to the other turtles.

Both the stages and the music are pretty good, and as far as I know this is one of the first games to allow a CPU vs. CPU fight, though there might have been other fighters released before it that could do it. There are some grammar issues, and problems with stage names, but that doesn't really detract from gameplay...it's more just an annoyance to me.

It's 'yay'.

The SNES version is solid.

I say a very slight yay because it's not all that great when you have so many fighters out there. Of course if you have a thing for TMNT, then by all mean. I bought it when I owned the SNES in the olden days but didn't like it very much. Probably because it was overshadowed by SFII. :P

Awesome so looks like my gamer instincts were on par. :) The final auction price was twice that of my max limit. I'll still keep an eye out for it.
