Military Madness has been on the Virtual Console for some time now, it was one of the first TG16 titles released in the US.
I always liked the Pcengine but wished they were easier to find. I only knew one guy who owned one growing up and I am about to own that one...
Turbo Grafx16
You can thank NEC's total marketing failure for not seeing the system more widespread. Of course, you can also thank the US public disinterest in paying quite a hefty sum for the Express portable and the CD-ROM unit. When they were released the prices were quite high. Necessary given how far ahead the design and technology were, but still high.
It was HUGE success in Japan and had, even still has, quite a huge following. It just wasn't what the US public was interested in.
Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.
I think with proper marketing and game releases it could have been what the US was looking for. I mean, it did get kinda smacked hard by Nintendo's illegal market practices, though.
In Japan NEC already had strong consumer marketing channels, and Hudson was a collaborator there. But in the US I think Hudson stepped back and let NEC do all the work, and NEC wasn't ready for it.

I agree. Nintendo was a BITCH back then. Nintento was a little like EA now trying to kill off its competitor.marurun wrote:I think with proper marketing and game releases it could have been what the US was looking for. I'm a Turbo-head. Got my TG-16 when price droped to $150, got the CD for $300 when they offered a free CD-G disc. I was lucky because I bought my base, booster, stick and 5 games (World Class BB, Bonk, Axe, Blazing & ???) off a kid who won it from a mag contest but didn't want it. I got everything for half retail at the time. I use to do mad trading on the turbo-listserv back in the day. I must have bought-beat-sold 100 HuCards and CD's. I would never unload my TG gems (Spriggian 1 & 2, Parodia, SF2', Parodius, X, Puyo, Flash... #1 being Saphire -- picked up for $50, mint)
My CD-ROM has long since died, but the Express and EMU keeps me happy today.

Here is my TG16 stuff. Most of this will be for sale soon. This is actually a very rare TG16 setup I've got here because not only is it complete with the manuals and even the Thank You insert (see the third image), but this is all wrapped in the special, one season only Christmas box that was specially printed for the holiday season (see the 3 pic for a clear shot of the box).
I can't believe that there would even be a couple hundred of these in existence to be honest. First, it was a low print run on this unit to begin with, but then how many boxes were destroyed, let alone the single season Christmas box. Does anyone have any more intel on this for me before I get it up on the bay?
Unit with Component & Game.
Includes: System, NEC RF Adaptor, Power Supply, TurboPro Controller, Keith Courage game (with plastic sleeve, case & manual), Original System Manual, Product Sheet (good luck finding that), & the system "Thank You" One Sheet).

Unit Snugly in Original Packaging w. Box

One Sheet Fits Snugly over the system (see the left foam packaging)

The turbo graphx 16 is my first system. I love the system and its games, especially shmups. However, just stay away from the Duo or its Japanese counterpart. I am now on my second Duo and the damn CD drive died on me just yesterday. Same shit happened to the first one too. It just stop spinning and wouldn't start back up. And I only had it for a year. What a waste of 225 dollars.
Of course we are speaking about a 12+ years old system. That's pretty good when you compared to the failure rate and time of the XBOX360. Anyway, if you want to play CD's game, then I recommend getting the PC engine with CD attachment. From what I've heard, it doesn't break very easily and cheaper to replace than a Duo. Now I don't know if I should sell it and replace it or try to fix it.

Yeah, I went looking around the net to diagnose my Duo and saw that website. I was thinking about tinkering with the Duo but I am worried I might make it worse. I really don't want to sell it cuz it was my childhood dream of owning that sexy piece of machinery.D.D.D. wrote:
