I'm very curious about this as well, it might be an alternative for me since my HDTV doesn't support S-video.

This might be better, but much more expensive, and complicated. A Genny s-video mod looks great, and it pretty simple for anyone who knows how to solder. One can also install some stereo ports in the back to make it easier than using the headphone jack. You say you want s-video on a model 2? I suggest buying a model 1 first, then consider s-video. Model 2s suck, unless they've had the crystal clear audio mod.

The later model 2 Genesis revision has very decent audio, in my opinion. Sure, the earlier model 2's have distortion, but the later ones are pretty clean. I have a model 1 with out TMSS which I was keeping for the "better" audio, but I ended up still using my model 2.

I took a LOT of samples from 4 different model Genesis consoles, as well as combining them with the Sega CD. I did a lot of comparing. The only really noticeable thing about the later model 2's is the bass isn't as loud as the model 1's. That's hardly a problem.

This is actually a really good video - the differences are night and day!

I never used S-video on the Genesis (can't be bothered with the modding) but I did use it on other systems, and it looks great.

Having said that though, I've jumped up to RGB for my systems now, particularly the Genesis, and the quality is just shit-your-pants amazing.

Going from composite to RGB on Genesis is a moment that makes you feel like you've been missing out on something incredible for years.

So S-video changes Blanka's stage to Ken's stage, eh?

You don't need to do anything special to the Genesis or its components to get RGB out of it, you just need a cable. I use this Scart RGB cable. I use this Genesis 2 cable because I have 32x set up as well, so in my case this cable plugs into the 32x. If you're not using that, you'll want to buy the appropriate cable for your model genesis. That same seller in the link has both.

I plug that into this Scart to Component converter box. The other side of that box has component outputs, which you plug into the tv.

For sound, I pull directly from the Sega CD (which is also connected to the Genesis 1 headphone jack) audio jacks and connect them to the tv.

And that's that for the Genesis.

There's one more piece to the puzzle for my other systems (like SNES), which don't have separate jacks for audio like the Genesis setup does. In that case, I bought this scart splitter which also has audio outputs. Scart cables also carry the audio, so plugging a scart cable into this splitter, and then connecting the splitter's audio jacks to the tv provides the sound.

I'm sure that all seems like a big complicated mess, but it actually isn't half so bad as it sounds, I promise. And the payoff is more than worth it.

seems legit, a bit pricey but about what you would pay for someone to mod that genny for component.
