S-Video on Genesis: Worth it? and who can do it for me?

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

I'm contemplating having my Genesis modded for S-Video (and possibly composite + audio in the back). On the one hand I know that it's technically better. On the other hand, I know the Genesis uses dithering and other effects to create extra colours on screen that wont come through as intended over s-video.

I'm curious of A) If it's worth it. B) Who here would do it for me. C) How much it would cost.

Definitely worth it. Even in RF, dithering has never worked for me to create "extra colors" or transparency. I can see dithering from a mile away. Even the Neo Geo uses dithering to blend colors and that thing was primarily seen in RGB in the arcades.

Super worth it from the things I've seen.

It is DEFINITELY worth it! Reading about it and viewing pictures on the internet doesn't do it justice. After I modified mine for S-Video, I was completely blown away. Sonic games looks absolutely amazing. After viewing the S-Video, going back to composite is like looking at the TV under water. Very dirty water.

Yes, for some games, S-Video will have negative effects. It's not too bad though. The clouds in the first level of Vectorman definitely don't look as nice. Lights and shadows in Streets of Rage 3 don't look as nice. But overall, it's worth it. If you want, you can always use composite for some games and S-Video for the others. Me, I just use S-Video all the time.

If you want, I could probably mod your Genesis for S-Video. Send me a PM if you're interested and we'll hammer out the details. (NOTE: I'm offering this to a forum member that's been here for years and has a high post count. I am NOT offering this to people finding this thread on a Google. Do NOT PM me, I will not answer you!)

I have to put that note in there, otherwise I'll get an endless amount of PMs from 0 post members. :?

If you are interested in seeing the difference in quality, this video I made does a decent job of showing it. The link below goes directly to the relevant part of the video:

If you have a standard def CRT tv then S-Video is not really necessary. If you have an HD LCD TV, then OMGBBQWTF it makes a night/day difference. Composite on the LCD was unusably terrible, S-Video is SO clear.

I did the mod myself, the hardest part was digging out enough room for the plug on the back of the genny.

Not sure what results you got, but RF and composite on the Genesis is just pure TRASH! Doesn't matter what TV you're playing them on. I play my Genesis on a CRT and S-Video was a complete night and day difference from composite.

Indeed, s-video from my PS2 on my old CRT was much better than composite.

What about component? Heard of people using the CVS287 and CSY2100 adapters to convert RGB to component, which looks pretty nice from what I've seen. Definitely the most expensive route, though.
If you like retro games, come hang out on my stream!
