Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and Batman and the Mad Monk are both EXCELLENT books by Matt Wagner of Grendel fame. They are unofficial sequels to Batman: Year One. They fit in with it pretty perfectly.

But he has Knightfall. It's right there in his list.

BoringSupreez wrote:The Dark Knight Returns is probably the best comic book I've ever read, even better than The Watchmen. It's also got the best version of Robin I've ever seen. They really need to make a movie adaptation of it.

DKR better than Watchmen? I gotta seriously disagree with that one! (Though if you want to push me... The Sandman > Watchmen).

They are apparently planning a Dark Knight Returns animated movie though, can't wait for that one.

I've read both of those and they're both really solid tales. Pretty cheap to get nowadays too.

I think one book nobody's mentioned at all yet is Batgirl: Year One. That's kinda expensive to find nowadays but I thought it was all around great and far, FAR better than I expected.

Batman also plays a pretty big role and has a pretty cool portrayal in Superman: Red Son.

I've tried to read The Dark Knight Returns. I can't do it. Frank Miller's artwork is just so incredibly terrible I can't bear through it. He needs to stick to writing only.

And I do have Knightfall and the ensuing Knightsend already. Forgot to add that to my list.

*EDIT*: Actually, now that I went to fix it, I see that it was on my list.

Also, Tower of Babel is awesome. I am familiar with it. That was the last great JLA story during that particular JLA series (at least until the Crime Syndicate storyline some 50 issues later). What's so sad about that is that the stories before Tower of Babel were just as good up to that point in that series.

His artwork may not be the best, but it's worth getting over so as to enjoy a great story. It's like ignoring bad PS1 3D, so that you can enjoy some Medal of Honor or FFVII.

I would agree with that. I understand though. I think what really bugged me about Batman: Arkham Asylum was the art. It didn't really work for me and it really felt like the artist was often not properly conveying what Grant Morrison was trying to get across

Dave McKean's art and illustrations are really, really cool stuff. Whether his stuff works as comic book art however is up for debate I think.

I haven't read Arkham Asylum, but from what I flipped through it did look like the art would make it a kind of difficult read.

Hard to wrap my head around this. Maybe it's a generational perspective. At the time it was such a "grim and gritty" divergence from mainstream superhero art and had a wide influence.

Even though there were a few panels that made me think "I can draw better than that!", TDKR contains some powerful imagery. The battle with the mutant leader, Bats and Joker in the Tunnel of Love, Clark's confrontation with with Bruce, epic stuff. Shame to miss out on the best Batman story ever.

I was around then. I was a kid, though. Nonetheless, I was still a comic fan as a kid and actually had a copy of it. I ended up trading it for some Spider-Man comics. Even then, I couldn't look past the artwork. The whole thing just looks incredibly sloppy. It was a huge disappointment because Batman has always had great visuals. Batman, his villains, and the city of Gotham itself are all very visual. And the comic medium as a whole is a visual medium. I don't see how this would be hard to understand.
