Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?

Didn't some games have RNG issues with the PS2 (original)? CV:SotN being the most notable.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I'm not sure that the issue there is entirely something you could attribute to wear. I happened to work at Software Etc during the PS2 launch, and we had people with CD or DVD reading capabilities fail on their console within the first few months. Obviously it was never an epidemic on the level of the RRoD, but it's an occasional issue that the PS2 has basically had since day one.CRTGAMER wrote:Both of my PS2s can read PS2 DVD and CD games fine, but I see a lot of postings where the PS2 will not read the blue CD PS2 games.
Some additional benefits, IMO, to PS2 playback would be more readily available (perhaps better?) wireless controllers and optical/digital sound output without modding.
The PS3 also has perks for playing PSX games:
- HDMI output, easily hooked to a lot of PC monitors directly or via an adapter
- Removes reliance on memory cards, and provides for easy backup/transfer if desired. (for those who haven't used one, you set up virtual memory cards for PSX and PS2 and save to those, you can copy to/from actual memory cards using a USB adapter)
- Allows for remote play to a PSP. Unlike PS3 games, only a few of which support it, you can stream any PSX game to a PSP. Only particularly useful in relatively close proximity to the PS3, but if you just want to play some older games while others are using the TV or something you can do it.
Biggest downside being that it drops the old controller ports, and in turn old accessories (though standard wireless controller if that's all you'd want).

Oh wow, leave it to Sony to create a mess that won't allow us to make sweeping statements about compatibility.pakopako wrote:Didn't some games have RNG issues with the PS2 (original)? CV:SotN being the most notable.
My PS1 is currently chipped, so I would definitely be chipping my PS2 if I were to do this. The benefits I was primarily interested in was s/pdif audio and component output, but I didn't know if there were benefits. Unreliable compatibility is definitely something that would make me want to just use the PS1.
Re: Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?
The PS1 doesn't output component? I remember playing FF7 on my PS2 and switching between composite and component. There was a definite difference between the two images. The colors were more saturated with component cables.
About putting extra wear and tear on the PS2, that's exactly why I keep a PS1 around. My PS1 is chipped as well, and although I've been meaning to chip my PS2 slim (I also have a fat) I don't know if I'll ever get around to that (just one of many things on my "to do" list lol). Anyway, I'll mostly play PS1 games on my PS1, save for a few rare occasions. I also love the loading screen/music. I like hearing that when I load a PS1 game, and I like to hear the PS2 splash screen when I play a PS2 game. It just takes me back to when the systems were new.

It doesn't.Ziggy587 wrote:The PS1 doesn't output component?
Compatibility issues are very few and far between, and you may have issues with some PSX revisions too. For example, from stuff I have, FFV has graphical corruption on the save game screen on the PS2 (SE says keep opening the screen and you can get a good one)...Street Fighter Collection 2's music skips on my PSX (a 1001). Others are known to have FMV issues.Jamisonia wrote:Oh wow, leave it to Sony to create a mess that won't allow us to make sweeping statements about compatibility.
Vast majority of the time, PSX games work perfectly fine on the PS2 (and 3). The few potential issues you could run into justify keeping a working PSX in the closet, but hooked up full-time? Not worth it to me.

So if I were to switch to a PS2 slim, what modchip would be the best? This site has so many different ones, I'm not sure which one to get. I'd like to get the best one, that has the most compatibility and is the easiest on the PS2 (some same they hurt the laser lens less?) Soldering is not an issue.

IF I ever get around to it, this is the one I'll probably be getting: http://www.modchip.ca/store/product.php ... 268&page=1
Re: Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?
Just wanted to say, getting PS1 games to work via component on a PS2 while hooked up to a HDTV is a pain in the ass and involves using homebrew apps to force the resolution.
Re: Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?
It is? I didn't have to do anything special.

Quite a lot of TV's get the "mode not supported" because of the 240p, while composite and s-video accept the signal and pass it along on a 480i stream, component sends the raw 240P signal. ICO also has this problem.Ziggy587 wrote:It is? I didn't have to do anything special.
However using GSM mode selector you can force the 480i signal.
EDIT: Also depends on the game you are playing of course, different games ran at different resolutions.
