Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?

Post by Jamisonia »

I've always had a PS1 connected to my CRT along with older systems, and a PS2 connected to my HDTV along with newer systems. Now I'm rethinking this. It seems the PS2 may be superior at playing PS1 games than the PS1. Is this true? Is there any advantage to playing PS1 games on a PS1, other than to own every console?

There are a few PS1 games that don't work on the PS2... Fortunately none of them are any good IMO. So your PS1 games on the PS2 is just fine. :)

The PS1 startup sound is far superior and you can get an attached LCD screen for the PSone as well.

The start-up sound is bad ass but not worth it to keep around.

I have a modded one hooked up in my office so I can play translated games. Apart from that, there is little reason to keep a PSX/PSone hooked up over a PS2/3. Unless you play alot of Power Shovel - since I dont think the joystick works with the PS2 but I may be wrong (Crux feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

My PS2 will not play PS1 boots, so I keep it around, but not hooked up. I suppose I should not play bootlegs but we all know that's not gonna happen.

My PS2 cannot play many of my favorite PS1 games including Nuclear Strike, Tomba!, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and Legend of Dragoon.

Note that some model PS2's have different compatibility with PS1 games. There's even a particular revision of the slim that cannot play certain PS2 games.

I prefer not playing movies or older disc games on a newer console. This saves on unnecessary wear of the newer console. Now the PS2 is very inexpensive, but a concern of the PS1 game CDs maybe wearing out the reader quicker? Both of my PS2s can read PS2 DVD and CD games fine, but I see a lot of postings where the PS2 will not read the blue CD PS2 games.

PS1 games in PS2 Console Advantage
1. Component hookup
2. A little faster Loading
3. A little smoother graphics
The PS2 Service menu can adjust PS1 load speed and graphics.

PS1 games in PS2 Console Disadvantage
1. PSX Parallel port for cheat carts and movie viewers
2. Some games not compatible on the PS2
3. PS1 easier to mod chip for imports
4. PSOne is smaller as a transportable portable game console
5. Newer PSX has the Soundscope Music Player

i still have my original playstation and its retired. I only use my ps2 to play ps1 since it does smooth things out a bit on ps1 games.

I would play my ps1 alot more if it was modded, because then i wouldnt have to deal with the swap trick.
