Stephen King novels

Post by RCBH928 »

Hello,

I wanted to see the movie "IT" since I was a kid, but I was too scared, now that it came back to me I went to download it but every review is saying read the book its much better.

I went to take a look, it appears the book is 1100+ pages!!
DAMN! How long does it take to read such a book. The Max i can give a day is 1 hour to read, and in that 1 hour i can read 20 pages usually. So the book will take out of my life 55hrs thats 2.29 days of my LIFE! AAAAAAAH

I just want to know is there something wrong with me or what? Do people read that much really? am I doing something wrong? i always wanted to read more but I really cant pass the 20 pages/hr mark

Well, you can probably work to read faster. Are you reading the English version or a translated edition? Can you read English as good as your native language?

As for how fast I can read, it depends on how many words are on a given page. I'm generally a fast reader but I can't quantify how fast in pages per minute.

IT the "movie" is a pale comparison to the book, and yeah, people will read 1100+ pages if the story is that good. Heck, my wife reads for hours each day, and we both visit the library each week.

Just think how long people play FFX. That's way over 2 days for a lot of people.

Not so much gay bashing as certain characters calling everyone a faggot, but yeah, the ending...well, the entire story is different from the book (in majority).

For King though, shipping may be a bit more.

And it's also much more disturbing, when King decides to write something insane well it usually is insane  (Read Gerald's Game to see arguably the most fucked up thing that King has done).

As for the length of the book, you could read 5-20 pages a day, if you do it frequently you should finish the book in 2 months max.

That's US standard shipping. King doesn't live in the US.

Damn, I read 'It' way back when I was in middle school, at age twelve going on thirteen. I remember reading a few of his shorter novels under his "Richard Bachman" pen name, "The Long Walk" and "Thinner", which were available at my school library, then for whatever reason decided to take on "It" from the public library.

I recall zoning out a bit over halfway in, I was too young to grasp all of what was being thrown at me, but eventually finished 'It' after a few months. I used to trudge that huge book around to every class... could a kid get away with that nowadays? If my parents and teachers only knew that.... SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT....................

.... that the book contains a scene where the group of young friends each take turns having sex with the only female member of the gang, for reasons best left in the book, but is essentially a pre-teen gang bang. Heady stuff for my seventh grade self.

END OF SPOILER.

Definitely a book a I need to revisit as an adult. wonder if it holds up to my preferred Stephen King epic 'The Stand', which i've re-read several times, or what I consider his scariest, 'Pet Semetary', which is one of the few books to truly scare the shit out of me.

Thanks for everyone's response!

I read read and speak English very well, maybe just as good as my own language. I face same issue read with my native language though. As for fast reading, I dont know what that exactly means, but if you mean almost skimming, I can do that but you sometimes miss the details. I have a way of reading a sentence and then analyzing it, I give a good thought to what I read. I just dont look over it and go on. I try to understand what the author is trying to send to me.

@Luke
I find playing videogames does not take so much effort as reading. I can play for 4 hours, I cant read for 4 hours. My brain probably jams after 1 hour exact.

As for the book and shipping, thanx a lot! But This book is popular enough to be found here locally(hopefully) or I can buy the digital version. Its not like a Saturn game :p

Any one read the book and saw the movie?
Do you think its THAT much worth it reading the book over the movie? Is it THAT more enjoyable?
I mean the movie will only take 3.5 hours of my life :p compared to like 2 months!

I always wondered why do people sell stuff like for $0.1 or even $1. Do you really want that $1?! I understand if some one does a mass sales, but I dont think any one makes bulk sales with a book or a movie. He is shipping each product separately!
