This is the best Internet review of a movie, hands down. The only improvement would be "Aliens: Sort of like Alien, only this time with an 's' ".

Honestly, ALIEN and ALIENS are worlds apart. ALIEN defined the space horror genre, while ALIENS was no where near as claustrophobic and was a sci-fi action movie. Both are great, don't get me wrong, but ALIEN was completely groundbreaking. If you have the special editions, you have GOT to watch Scott's interview about his interaction with HR Giger.

Apparently the first time they met they shook hands and then Giger pulled out a small ball of aluminum foil. In said ball was opium which he offered Scott, who declined. Giger then proceeded to smoke the opium, right in the middle in what was an interview for character design.

I don't condone the use of drugs, but apparently Giger has his finger on the pulse of what drugs lead him to creating some incredible art. Kind of related, it is no secret that a lot of comedians smoke pot. Before a few shows I've performed at, I've been invited to partake. Nope, no way, no how. I've seen some very funny people bomb just because they lost their rhythm from smoking. That said, I saw Mitch Hedberg when he was tripping balls and he killed. But the cool thing about almost every single comedian I've met is that drugs are optional. There is no pressure to use, you're not labeled as a square if you don't, and if you do use no one gives you guff. It's just a unique situation where there isn't any judgement... (well, there are a few asshole comics, but it always ends up biting them in the ass).

HR Giger is bizarre, look at the bar posted online somewhere. The DVD special edition collection is the one to get, the shear size of extras.

I haven't seen anyone label anyone else a "square" for not partaking since 6th grade.

The Blu Ray set has every single extra from that DVD set, as well as nearly all the extras from the old DVDs that were left out too, AND several new extras on top of all those. If you have a blu ray player, that's the set to get.

Alien is gorgeous, I can't wait to see that beast in Blu Ray.

I'm a big fan Aliens, but there's no question that Alien is a totally different beast. Also a key thing for me... Jerry Goldsmith. Hard to top.

But yeah, funny enough I just watched Alien for the first time all the way through, either last year or early this year, can't remember. It was a breathtaking experience and I'm not one that's spooked by that sort of movie or whatever usually, but I watched it in the dark with headphones and it was insane. Probably one of the most intense movie watching experiences ever, I just love the subtlety and how it was handled.

I love this deleted scene:

They better not mess with the space jockey in Prometheus.

HR Giger doing drugs... doesn't surprise me at all, haha. Love his stuff.

Oh geez it looks phenomenal. I seriously didn't expect it to look this nice, they did an awesome job with the transfer. It's not completely perfect (the exterior shots of the ship are kinda softer looking for obvious reasons, as is the case with a lot of blue screen stuff on a lot of movies.) but it's pretty damn close. It doesn't have any artificial sharpening or anything going on either.

Damn, can't wait to see it. I've got a rip of Blade Runner's BD release downloaded that I still need to watch as well (I'll actually pick these up when I have money!). It sounds like the best cut of the film too from what I read. I still haven't seen the weird narrative version, but I hear it's not really worth it anyways, lol. Still ... kind of curious about it.

It sounds like the BD release has all the extras you could want as well, or the collectors edition set at least.

I don't actually have the BD set (was too expensive for my pocket) but I do have the standalone releases of Alien and Aliens, which are the same discs as in the box set. I'm not sure what extras are on specifically on those discs though as I haven't really explored them.

You can really appreciate the amount of work and care put into all of the practical effect work from those movies in the new transfers. It's just great.

I really should get around to watching my own BD set soon. I re-watched Alien for the umpteenth on DVD this summer when i showed it to my undergraduate film class, and they pretty much all thought it was lame.

Alien is a masterpiece of the sci-fi AND horror genres, and is head and shoulders above the rest. That said, I actually like ALL FOUR of the films in the quadrilogy and would go so far as to rank 4 above 3.
