Console Wars: Like v. Like

Post by o.pwuaioc »

Rather than the usual SNES v. Genesis etc. kind of thread, how about we do one of consoles against the same kind? So:

Atari VCS v. Atari "Wood Veneer" v. Atari "Darth Vader" v. Atari 2600 Jr.
NES "toaster" v. NES toploader v. Famicom
GB v. GB Pocket
SNES (NTSC) v. SNES (PAL/NTSCJ) v. SNES Jr. v. Super Famicom
Genesis Model 1 v. Genesis Model 2 v. Genesis Model 3
PlayStation v. PSOne
PS2 v. PS2 Slim
PS3 v. PS3 Slim
XBOX360 v. XBOX360 Slim
GBA v. GBA SP v. GB Micro
DS v. DSL v. DSi v. DSiXL

Also, what about color variations? N64: Black, Green, "Pokemon"? Saturn: Black or White? Etc...

- Atari "Wood Veneer"
- NES Toaster
- SNES (PAL)
- Genesis Model 1
- PlayStation
- PS2
- PS3 Slim
- XBOX360
- GBA SP
- DSL (Though XL is amazing in size, the price makes it unattractive.)

You need to add SNES (NTSC)vs SNES (PAL/NTSCJ) vs SNES JR as well as DS/DSL/DSi/DSiXL.

Winners for me:

Atari "Darth Vader"
NES "toaster" (for nostalgia reasons, though the toploader does look good)
Original Game Boy
SNES non-yellowed (would take SNES Jr. over yellowed SNES, but really I'd like a Super Famicom that played NTSC games)
Genesis Model 2. When I was a kid I loved the Model 1 better - seemed to be sturdier.
Original Playstation, though, like the toploader, the PSOne is beautiful.
PS2 slim
GBA SP

As far as color variations go, I prefer black for everything that comes in black except for the white Saturn. As much as I liked that see-through green the N64 came in, black just looks "cooler" (if I can still say that without sound like my 12 year old self). Definitely black Game Cube. I have the teal GBC, and as hot as sevin0seven's yellow GG goes, something still draws me to the black.

What about you?

Your also missing the Master System variations as well as the Gameboy and Gameboy Pocket (I guess).

GB is between the NES and SNES, but unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the Master System variations... Got pics?

- NES toploader, even though I've never owned one and they're so expensive. They just look awesome.
- Brick GB is nostalgic, but I like my black GB pocket.
- Hard to say on the SNES, I really don't mind the US design that much. I am not a fan of the small model 2 / Jr or whatever though at all.
- Hard to say on the Genesis as well, maybe a tiebreaker on the model 1 and 2.
- Love some of the JVC's. The CDX looks epic, damn I'd love to have one of those.
- Regular Playstation
- PS2 slim
- PS3 slim (no question)
- 360 slim (honestly not a fan of either when it comes to looks I guess, though it's an improvement over the huge Xbox)
- GBA SP
- DSL

When it comes to consoles I tend to just prefer straight black colors. Easier to keep them looking nicer and all overtime.

The only problem with some of these are that some of the variations are simply better from an objective standpoint.

SNES model 1 > model 2 because the model 2 doesn't support s-video without modding
NES Toaster > NES toploader because the latter doesn't' support av without modding
Genesis 1 has better sound than 2 and 3 doesn't support any of the addons

etc etc.

Unless you're only asking about aesthetics.

True, but NES top-loader plays international games doesn't it so that's a good reason to prefer it.

Personally I prefer the RetroDuo clone machine.

If you get it from UK websites you get a USA-to-UK transformer and adaptor so it'll work on our currents. The good thing about this though, is you can get the USA NES carts and you can get ANY SNES/Super Famicom carts. European, North American, Japanese... it's great. Considering the SNES in USA is a contendent for best console ever, but in Europe is mediocre at best, this is a must have. To be able to actually play all the RPGs that the SNES is famous for. Plus the console is Black, and I prefer black consoles.
