Saturn Shumps

Post by andymol21 »

I'm looking start a Saturn collection, 5-10 games max, and need some suggestions. I'm on a pretty tight budget and I'm completly new to Sega consoles so I'm clueless. I'm not intrested in 1-on-1 fighters, and I am intrested in vertical shooters, which I know the Saturn is very good at. I've looked through all of the guides on racketboy.com, but the cheap game feature doesn't seem to have any shooters, and I'm not wanting to spend enough to get the ones on defining games. NiGHTS will be my first purchase, with Sonic Jam next, but can anyone have a look at this eBay page with my search criteria and recommend any games there?

Do they have to be PAL titles?
Most of your shmups are going to be Japan imports

Here's a brief list to get you started:

Can you play Japanese or US titles? How much are you looking to spend?
Unfortunatley cheap and Saturn don't get along if you want good games, there are a few exceptions thought.

Shmups: (i think most of these have PAL releases)
Gallactic Attack(us) (also called Layer Section or Rayforce) is one the the best vertical Saturn shmups and it usually goes for less than 10 dollars.

Soukyugurentai (i think it's called Terra Diver in the UK) is great and I've seen the PAL version go for less than the japanese one. This is a must own and i paid 30 for my copy.

Darius Gaiden is an awesome horizontal shmup. It's really challanging, there are mechanical sea creature boss battles, a great weapons system and it just looks awesome. Plus there are a ton of different paths to take to get to the last level. I got my copy for 6 bucks.

I don't know if there are PAL versions of Donpachi or DoDonpachi. But these are must own Japanese horizontal shmups. I picked up DoDonpachi for 30 bucks, but it usually goes for a bit more.
