NES recommendations

Post by D.D.D. »

Hey y'all~

My first console (after the PC and Apple ][c) was the NES, which was my lone freebie, after that I had to buy everything on my own. So being the young entrepreneur that I was, I stupidly sold all my NES stuff to get the Genesis - sold the Gen to get a TG16 and so on until the SNES and I realized that I missed my old games and started to buy back the old stuff.

Right now, my list for my NES is rather pathetic so I'd like some recommendations for the NES (import or US) as I'm going to pick up another NES (top loader this time) and start building a new library again.

This is what I have currently:

Castlevania
Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse
Dragon Warrior
Excitebike (Famicom version)
Final Fantasy
Ice Hockey
Macross (Famicom version)
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2:Snake's Revenge
Ninja Gaiden
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Wai Wai World 2 (Famicom version)
Wizzards & Warriors
Zelda No Densetsu (Famicom disk system)

Anyhoo, lemme know and thanks. :)

Bionic Comando
Mega Man 2
Super Spike VBAll I have the multiplayer adapter and me and my friends still play this.
Super Mario Bros 3
Battletoads
Double Drible
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland
Street Fighter 2010
Castlevania 2 Simons quest (I especially liked the fire whip)

And of course you can check out rackets article about the hidden gems
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2007/03/ ... games.html

Ive mentioned a lot of Capcom games but I think 8 out of 10 games they developed for the NES were really good games.

I would recomend a couiple titles mosty action/aventure types...(all US titles)

Metroid - My favorite NES title and one of the best games on any system a true pioneer in gameplay.
Contra and Super C - best shoot 'em ups you can find on the NES. love 'em. defined my childhood.
Goonies 2 - really fun game and pretty challanging. Reminds me of the Castlevania series a bit.
Crystalis - and early SNK title that rivals Zelda. I wouldn't say it's a clone, more of a contemporary.
Shatterhand - Fun game, awesome boss fights and has one best soundtracks on the NES
Bionic Commando - This is just a solid title all around, and tricky. you can't jump only use your bionic arm. ohhh.
River Cty Ranson - a Double Dragon style beat 'em up with RPG element and a cool story. I like the fighting system better than DD too.
Mega Man series - my favorite is 3, but any of them are great. be warned, the games will piss you off because of insane difficulty on some stages
Zelda: The Adventures of Link - it's a Zelda with 2d stages! awesome, but the reason behind many thrown controllers.
Castevania 2: Simons Quest - more rpg/item collection than the others, more akin to SOTN. Plus it's free roaming, and you have towns/shops.
Lifeforce - my favorite NES shmup. feels more grown up than the others on the NES. cool weapons and nice looking levels.
Little Nemo: Dream Master - Great Platformer, the ememies and levels are designed so well and it's just fun!

These are some of my favorites, and emulate them first and see if you like them. Good thing is I picked up most of these for around 3-5 bucks.

Thanks guys~
It's funny, I used to own so many of those games but forgot about them.
And yeah I have read that article as well but I was also looking for anyone's opinion in addition. :)

Also Konami made alot of my favorites, several of it's developers went on to form Treasure. Not bad eh.
You really can't go too wrong with either company on the NES. THere are a few sub-par titles, but most of them are pretty dang good.

I still play a lot of my SNES games but when I've gone back to play my NES games, a lot of them just don't hold up as well. Any one play one of their old favorites that just didn't quite hold up?

Although I love nes games, I find that I lack the patience for them lately. They are ok until they become too frustrating, then I end up just turning them off and moving to something that's a bit more fun. I'd say the biggest disapointment was the game 8 Eyes. When I was a kid I was convinced it was as good as Castlevania. I played again last week, and I was sadly disapointed. You're weapon is so small and the hit detection is horrid. But not for you, enemies can nail you just by hitting the very edge of your little pixels. I couldn't even finish even one of the 8 levels. Maybe when i was a kid I just had a better attention span, and was just excited to playing a game rather than doing homework!

Top NES Games List

Post by timewarpgamer »

You can find my top NES games list here:
http://www.timewarpgamer.com/pages/nesmain.html

I know it's a little long, but I'm sure that it highlights some import titles that you've probably never played. If I had to choose my top 5 games, they'd probably be:

Batman
Contra
Just Breed (an import with an excellent fan translation)
Legend of Zelda
River City Ransom
