Shmups with infinite lives?

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

Any recommendations?

I like shmups, but to tell the truth, I suck balls at them.

I own two right now: Castle of Shikigami 2 and DeathSmiles.

I can't get very far in Shikigami 2, but DeathSmiles is great because you essentially have infinite lives (it's like pumping in an endless supply of quarters).

Anyway, I'm looking for other games with infinite lives: the kind of game where you re-appear RIGHT where you die, not the ones that send you back to the beginning of a level (checkpoints are okay, I guess). I like to compete against myself for high scores.

Help a brotha out!!!

If you're not particular about the kind of machine you're going to try them on, why not try to play shmups on MAME? Infinite credits.

That's a good suggestion. I have MAME, but I'm not in love with it. Probably because I haven't figured out how to use it 100%. As far as consoles go, I own most consoles except for the more obscure ones (see my signature).

All you need is an arcade stick with a usb compatible connection. Each rom (game) has the ability to change or map the buttons to the stick or controller.

I thought this was a joke? I guess I don't recall the last shmup I couldn't set to infinite continues, if I so desired, generally the credit/continue button or comparable on whatever pad you are using. If your referring to a home console game, see if the main menu has an "arcade" version of the game, most likely that will be unlimited continues by default, or you should be able to set it to that at least.

Oh, and MAME sucks.

^I'm referring to "arcade" version on a the cart/CD menu of the console game.

MAME, never been a fan, long before I had any of the toys I have now. Its the same feeling I get when I use a multi-cart, CD-R backup, or even a 1st party re-release on a compilation disc. Maybe its a personal mental block I have, but i'm not alone, I know that.

Sevin and I played Dimahoo on an emulator the other day, the music and in-game sound was blended together, their was slowdown at some point on each level, response lag on bombs, and the graphics were mildly fuzzy - none of this exists on the PCB.

But, I wasn't suggesting he buy a PCB. Someone suggested MAME as a way to use infinite lives - i'd suggest playing the arcade version of the disc/cart you have before i'd suggest MAME.

Doesn't Trigger Heart have unlimited lives?
It's also a Bullet Hell game, so good luck with that.

MAME does suck, and I have no cabs :P

I got the rom for Garegga just to see how it would compare to the saturn port, and... Eugh!

I understand why people use it though. I hate that I can't play Dimahoo, Armed Police Batrider, or Progear without mame or a pcb.
