It was smooth and fast paced because it was so simple. But here's my thing - and this is a general beef with ALL menu based RPG's, not just Final Fantasy - if the gameplay is going to be so utterly and mindlessly simple...why not let me have actual control of my characters?

Why should I have an awkward menu based system when I can only do like 3 things in toto on a static battlefield with practically no interaction between my characters?

In a game like Chrono Trigger, yeah the menu system was understandable. But you could do a hell of a lot more in Chrono Trigger than you could in Final Fantasy X. In a strategy RPG like Tactics Ogre, the menu system is understandably necessary.

In Final Fantasy X, the battle system only accomplishes three things:

-It artificially lengthens the game by sucking your life away with panoramic shots of the characters and the utterly forgettable enemies.

-It allowed you to pause by simply not pushing any buttons

-It let the developers avoid creating something that actually involved the player or incorporating enemies and events into the overhead tunnel - I mean world. The overhead world.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

So a derivative battle system coupled with way less flexibility (for the majority of the game) on your characters progress? Just didn't do it for me.
To me, the swapping out is what made the character specialization work. You could rotate in who you needed for a particular attack. The way it was designed actually meant you made for easy, convenient use of the entire cast as compared to most RPGs where you primarily stick to your favorite few.

He's almost as much Solid Snake as Batman though, and honestly I think you could give the same critique to David Hayter's performance for that (actually, probably moreso, the whole gargling shattered glass voice for Snake often sounds forced).

@Flake, like I said earlier FFXIII's Crystarium is horrible. Play that sometime and you will WANT the Sphere Grid back.

Heh, well I kind of did hint at this earlier when I said I liked his normal sounding performance on the first game quite a bit. He still sounded good in MGS2, but MGS3 was pushing it a little and then yeah, MGS4 was a bit much at times (people tend to argue it fits his age, yadda). I'd argue though that it wasn't as grating in these games because a wide variety of the voice acting was pretty distinct, whereas in DXHR... outside of Jensen, everyone else sounds completely normal. I also kind of think maybe the recording just wasn't that great either, his voice just sounded so out of place a lot of the time. Didn't hate it but it was a bit much.

I've also seen Jensen's voice compared to Clint Eastwood, which probably isn't far off either and isn't quite as "out there" as Batman or Snake. Or maybe they just wanted to make it sound similar to the first game.
