I really enjoyed FFX's battle system because I just plain found it quick-paced and most importantly fun.
I found the story mediocre. Not terrible or anything, I just found it rather bland.
If this version allows you to SKIP CUTSCENES, which upon starting a replay of the PS2 version I found was quite an annoyance, I would probably prefer it to the PS2 version. Also, I would like to see them implement the bonuses such as the dark summons that were in the international release.

I think they paid extra-close attention to that sort of this in MGS because it was trying to be like an action movie that you play.Xeogred wrote:Also this is really random and I'm not poking fun at FFX alone here, but anyone find it kind of insane how good the dubbing is for Metal Gear Solid? I kind of really thought about that a lot recently, it's just years and years ahead of its time with care and attention to detail with the voice acting, especially for the 90's when you look at any other big game released from Capcom or whatever at the time and the dubs are absolutely laughable (in a cheesy charming way if you grew up with them though). But whenever I go back to MGS, it still sounds amazing and still puts some games to this day to shame in terms of dub work. I even still kind of wish David Hayter stuck with the more normal sounding approach for Snake throughout the whole series, but oh well.
Whoever was the manager/director or whatever on that stuff deserves several medals.
Hey, they had to have a Japan fanboy in there somewhere. I've noticed that every MGS game has had at least 1 character who talks about Japan at some point. National pride or something, I guess.ZeroAX wrote:Though Otakon alone almost killed it for me. Come on really? A loser nerd as a super smart scientist? Did they just want to troll us gamers there? XD
Dues Ex had good voice acting for a few of the characters, but most of them had pretty generic voices. It was mainly the primary villains that stood out. The nameless NPCs often had average voices. Except in Hong Kong, the voice acting there was downright bad.Xeogred wrote:Starcraft and Deus Ex have some great voice acting in my book for older PC games that I've played. Same with some other older ones here and there. I'd even put Deus Ex's voice acting above Human Revolutions honestly, lol. Not that either of them are perfect. I know a friend that quit playing Deus Ex when he got to Hong Kong because of the bad accents, now that's being critical.

The same can be said for Human Revolution though. Jensen's Bale Batman impression gets a bit grating as well, there are times when the guy sounds really awesome... but then he sounds really strained when he goes back into the Batman voice. The guy who voiced JC Denton also voiced Paul and Walter Simmons (I think), that's pretty impressive.BoringSupreez wrote:Dues Ex had good voice acting for a few of the characters, but most of them had pretty generic voices. The way I look at the Hong Kong situation is that Chinese people don't speak amazing English anyways.

I guess gaming would be better if every videogame character ever wasn't dubbed by the same dude.

I'm pretty sick of him myself already, lol. He CAN change it up sometimes though.jfrost wrote:I guess gaming would be better if every videogame character ever wasn't dubbed by the same dude.
Okay... kind of, haha. When I played the game though I guess I didn't catch it right away.
EDIT: He sounds different here, lol:

You provide an interesting look into it. Shame all that's buried under the poor presentation, characterization, and voice acting.Flake wrote:Final Fantasy X was crap in my opinion for every reason except the story.
There were some real choice concepts explored in FFX's narrative. I especially liked the theme of the story, that of bearing responsibility for the well being of others.
The entire story was filled with people realizing that in order to be at peace with themselves they had to make a sacrifice in order to protect those they cared about. For Wakka it was blitzball. For Khimari it was solidarity with his own people. Tidus' role was that of the erstwhile youth, who had to learn that lesson the hard way.
The ultimate plot twist, to me, was when he, the biggest critic of Yuna's purported destiny, essentially took her place.
FFX showed as much depth of character and story line as Final Fantasy VI or IX did and it was really, in my opinion, the game's only saving grace. I disliked almost everything else about it from the linearity of presentation to the terrible voice acting.
(You really hated the battle system?

The battle system would have been better if they'd allowed you some flexibility with the level up system much, much earlier in the game.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'm specifically referring to the battles themselves. I agree with the leveling system being inflexible.Flake wrote:The battle system would have been better if they'd allowed you some flexibility with the level up system much, much earlier in the game.
Actually doesn't the international version have a mode with a much more open sphere grid? I've always wanted to try that.
Re: Square-Enix announces Final Fantasy X remake for Vita & PS 3
The battle system was...well, a typical Final Fantasy battle system. "oooh, you can switch your characters out mid battle" didn't really wow me or strike me as something innovative.
So a derivative battle system coupled with way less flexibility (for the majority of the game) on your characters progress? Just didn't do it for me.
And a boring battle system spread out over 30+ hours does not a happy Flake make.

You know I actually forgot about that character switching thing until just now
.
It was smooth, fast paced, and it wasn't ATB for once. But eh oh well. You didn't like it, no biggie.
