So what exactly was it that everyone hated so much about the story?
As for dubbing, it's no worse than most Japanese stuff that comes out here. It's right on par with Catherine. It was pretty good considering it was the first time they ever dubbed an FF game

"I'm dead but not really". lol, sorry but that one really got to me. I also hated the whole Yevon(?) church thing that Yuna was all about for the entire thing, Sin, Seymour, and other things just irked me a lot. I dunno, just wasn't that engaging to me story wise. I think weak characters can really bring that factor down for me, when I'm not interested in them it just kind of hurts the plot too.
Also this is really random and I'm not poking fun at FFX alone here, but anyone find it kind of insane how good the dubbing is for Metal Gear Solid? I kind of really thought about that a lot recently, it's just years and years ahead of its time with care and attention to detail with the voice acting, especially for the 90's when you look at any other big game released from Capcom or whatever at the time and the dubs are absolutely laughable (in a cheesy charming way if you grew up with them though). But whenever I go back to MGS, it still sounds amazing and still puts some games to this day to shame in terms of dub work. I even still kind of wish David Hayter stuck with the more normal sounding approach for Snake throughout the whole series, but oh well.
Whoever was the manager/director or whatever on that stuff deserves several medals.
Oh, and funk you Konami/US or whoever for replacing Liquid's VA in the newer games.
(or just not using it I guess when they could have)

Re: Square-Enix announces Final Fantasy X remake for Vita & PS 3
I just could never forgive FFX for being the first FF game without an overworld. Traveling around and finding secret areas was one of my favorite parts about Final Fantasy (I still remember finding that underground village in FF8 and being convinced that it will have something to do with the story in the future, cause otherwise there was no point in fighting the garden master.....me and my naive 15 year old mind, thinking FF8's story was written coherently
).
Plus god knows how many hours I spent flying around the airship in FF6 and the Ragnarock in FF8. I was able to forgive FF12 and 13 cause I was already disappointed by FF10.
And yeah Xeogred MGS's voice acting was amazing. But please allow me to say that PC games had better voice acting for years. Really high quality stuff (of course there were still games with crappy voice acting, but in general things were muuuuch better compared to console games). But a big reason for that might be that back then PC games were mostly made by Western studios and console games by Japanese studios.

I forgive XII's lack of an over-world completely. I mean, at least it wasn't just a series of linear straight paths like X and XIII. You had a lot to explore, the world was HUGE, etc.
FFXII... now there's a game I have a real love/hate relationship with. At least I can say the voice acting for that game was pretty incredible.

I also think they did a much better job matching the English dialogue with the mouths. It was so painful to watch FFX's attempt that I kept my eyes glued on the subtitles.AppleQueso wrote:FFXII... now there's a game I have a real love/hate relationship with. That's definitely true. I guess I should have mentioned that's something I take into consideration when I think MGS's voice acting was really good, for consoles and from a Japanese developer. Even Kojima apparently prefers the English voices himself, lol.ZeroAX wrote:And yeah Xeogred MGS's voice acting was amazing. It's just one of those stories were it works best. Japan isn't known for its army stories. The US is.Xeogred wrote: That's definitely true. Though Otakon alone almost killed it for me. Come on really? A loser nerd as a super smart scientist? Did they just want to troll us gamers there? XD

Guys, really, when I see how demanding you guys are, I wonder why you still play games. I mean, what games pass your high standards of narrative, pacing, voice acting and so on?
Really. Portal? Half-Life? Any other?

yeah you are right. With so few options in the 30+ year history of the medium we should demand less. I mean a JRPG only lasts 50+ hours. Why should I think less of FFX just cause Xenoblade is just sooooooooooo much better? If a friend asks me which is better I won't answer, I'll tell him to waste 100 hours of his life to learn. It's not like he has a job, a girlfriend and a life in general.jfrost wrote:Guys, really, when I see how demanding you guys are, I wonder why you still play games.
