I'm thinking about sometime getting another crt just to flip it on its side permanently. So far I've only got one tate shmup, Galactic Attack, but man does it look better in tate mode. Has anyone else here done that? Any problems? Is it worth it the hassle? Should I make some sort of support for the TV?
If I do it I'll leave the tv off for a while before I flip it and after I've flipped it. I'll make sure it has good ventilation too.

I flip mine back and forth daily. Like you said, leave it off about 10 minutes before and after, just to be safe.
I recommend something with at least s-video.

Do you have some spinner setup? Or do you just lift the thing up?dunpeal2064 wrote:I flip mine back and forth daily. Like you said, leave it off about 10 minutes before and after, just to be safe.
Definitely. I'd probably get component too. I've got an s-video selector the saturn (and someday dreamcast) goes into. I think I'd attach a splitter to the output of the selector and have it go to both TVs.dunpeal2064 wrote:I recommend something with at least s-video.

I have another smaller CRT presently on it's side. I have a splitter from my VCR to go to two different sets. One is the tate and the other one my main one.

Re: Any advice on TATE TV setups

get a separate TV just for TATE! it's the coolest/nerdiest thing you can do!
you can easily find a flat screen CRT on craigslist for cheap or free
i'm currently rocking a 20". i've been toying with the idea of getting something bigger, but i must admit it's a pretty good size. big enough to fill your face, but small enough to be able to view the whole playing area without having to look around too much
here's some links that will help you get into some more TATE shmups:

Gotta be careful that the case (and the mounting you can't see inside) are sturdy enough to hold the tube. Bigger screens are more of a problem obviously. Also need to watch that the TV can still vent the heat out of the case.

I lift mine each time. Got used to it
I'll post some pics when I get off work. I just got 3 more shmups in the mail this morning, and all of them are TATE friendly, so might as well
Not sure of the model, but the TV is an Orion, I think maybe 27 inch?

Re: Any advice on TATE TV setups
Another thing I should point out to all those interested in tate setups is that the colours can get wonky if you put it on it's side, especially if it is near lots of other electronics, especially speakers.

Re: Any advice on TATE TV setups
Be careful about airflow aswell. When I use to setup a monitor for tate I put a boxfan on the top to pull the hot air out. The tv/monitor is not designed to be put that way so you should compensate. Now odds are it wont really matter, meaning it probably wont do major damage, but it is something to be mindful of, especially with a bigger tv/monitor.
