I didn't really like Metal: A headbanger's journey. It felt like Sam Dunn portrayed metal listeners as naive rebellious kids, then he says all these lame-ass lines like"this is where metalheads gather to worship their metal gods".
His other documentary, Global metal, is better.

All I ever saw from A Headbanger's Journey was that genre chart, which was... inaccurate to say the least.

However, I can tell you that ever since I first listened to In Flames I have found myself drawn to certain melodic death bands. I like Chaotic Beauty, A Virgin and a Whore and Before the Bleeding Sun from Eternal Tears of Sorrow. I really like a lot of the stuff Brandon Small has created with his virtual band Dethklok and was even thinking of throwing Dethklok on my list, but I didn't find myself enjoying Dethalbum II as much I did the first one. I've dug some songs by Soil Work and I enjoyed a lot of stuff from Dark Tranquillity's Character, Damage Done and Fiction albums. Most of In Flames early work I like. I've been cautious about hearing any of their more recent work though as I hear so many people hate on it. There are a couple Arch Enemy songs I like too.

Also, I tend to pick up on and enjoy melodic death elements in other bands like Eluveitie, Mercenary, Before the Dawn, and Into Eternity

I wouldn't say I love Death Metal, but I do find myself being open to its more melodic forms
I love melodic Death Metal, it's an interesting mixture of genres and Carcass does some fantastic stuff in that genre but sometimes it's too extreme, just looks at some of the song names: "Entrails Ripped From A Virgin's Cunt", "Fucked with a Knife", etc. (Those are Cannibal Corpse examples but it's in general pretty intense stuff).

Yeah, melodic death metal is pretty cool. I'm finding that I seem to just love melody in music in general. Not every type of metal seems to embrace it. It does seem like melodic death metal bands do bring a nice mix of genres together. Some of them are very experimental too, but I could say about some black metal bands too actually

It's funny, but when I started listening to melodic death metal I really didn't love the whole, death metal vocal style or as some people put it, the cookie monster vocals. I came to appreciate it over time as I got used to it and I actually like the intensity that that type of singing can bring to a metal song. Some bands have that contrast of a woman doing lovely clean vocals and then the guy comes in with the intense death metal vocals and I just really like that contrast of styles. This whole sort of beauty and the beast thing. Epica does that really well

I have to ask, what do you and others on this board think of Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy? It's amazing hearing those vocals she puts out and realizing that's a hot looking blond chick doing that. She's a pretty awesome front woman. I'm not a huge Arch Enemy fan but I love Enemy Within, Burning Angel and Enter the Machine. Enter the Machine is one of the most epic instrumentals I've ever heard. Anyway, check out this amazing woman!

Nothing about Angela's vocals has ever done much for me. Doesn't help that if you ask me the band was better when Johan Liiva was on vocals...

As far as female harsh vocalists go I like Runhild Gammelsæter from Thorr's Hammer. The woman from Gonin-Ish has a nice clean voice but her harsh vocals are kinda... vomity?

I don't know why you mentioned Carcass and then jumped to using Cannibal Corpse song titles as an example of how 'extreme' things get. Carcass's first album had stuff like "Genital Grinder" and "Vomited Anal Tract" after all.

Anyhow, you guys might enjoy Death - Symbolic and Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal I think. Neither of those albums are melodic death metal, but they are very accessible and have a lot of hooks.

I actually agree on that one. Other than that, I liked it.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

I just started listening to another interesting melodic death metal band in Kalmah. This is a pretty cool track off their last album

I'm also digging this song Wasted Heroes from Searing Meadow, another melodic death band I just discovered
