Well from my personal experiences, it was always people coming onto to message boards saying the game sucked and the lovers having to defend the game's merits. The game received high scores across the board for the most part, and if people get excited about that it doesn't mean they're propping the game up higher than anything else.Mozgus wrote:What planet do you live on?Flak Beard wrote:Speaking oh which, I'm not sure I ever recall people running around screaming about Halo being the best thing ever.
Like you said before, people will grasp for straws when bashing the game. If the community becomes up in arms about it, that doesn't mean they are sucking Halo or Bungie dick, they're just sick of the people who want to bitch and moan with arguments that don't hold up under scrutiny. Halo is by no means a terrible game by any stretch of the imagination. If the hype bothers you, ignore it, but people don't need make claims that everyone around every corner is praising it non-stop.
It goes both ways, you realize. People exaggerate about it being good, and people exaggerate about it being bad. Oh, and then there's the group that never played FPS games until Halo, so they just assume Halo invented it the genre, or improved on Doom. Yes, I have literally heard people say Halo is amazing because it lets you see a world through a soldier's eyes. I mean, Wow...Flak Beard wrote:Well from my personal experiences, it was always people coming onto to message boards saying the game sucked and the lovers having to defend the game's merits. What angers most people is that if it weren't for hype, Halo would have premiered with all the critical and retail success of, say, XIII, Red Faction, Black, NOLF, or Urban Chaos. All of these are average FPS games, though a couple are better than Halo I think. But then you have a games like TimeSplitters 2 and 3, which are easily better than Halo 1 and 2, aside from online play (I think 3 had online play but I didn't get to try it). They're the best console shooters you will find last generation. They are fucking packed with to the brim with content, great music, some of the best animation and character design, legitimate humor, tons of weapons from tons of ages, and so on. Try and find someone who actually knows what TimeSplitters is. It didn't help them at all that they were the team behind Goldeneye. If they would have spilled some funds into obnoxious advertising, then maybe the games would have had massive success, but instead they chose to put more money into the actual product. I thank them for that.

I totally get what you're saying, but you'll have that with any game that hits it as big mainstream wise. There'll be a large group of people who rave about Halo without playing any other FPS games. I guess I just struggle with the whole overall argument, because I'm a gamer who likes Halo, but also likes other FPS games (Timesplitters being one of them). I feel like Halo is still something special even if it doesn't re-invent the wheel or have any particular part that makes it stand out. It's just the way it all comes together for me. Sometimes it feels like the hardcore camp wants to hate on the mainstream games for no reason, and so I always feel inclined to step in and say it's ok to like something like Halo and still play the more underground stuff.Mozgus wrote:It goes both ways, you realize. That's a flawed argument. It's like saying Forza Motorsport sucks because it didn't invent the driving simulation genre. You can't judge a game by how original it is anymore. I'm pretty sure every single angle has been attempted now.Mozgus wrote:It goes both ways, you realize. People exaggerate about it being good, and people exaggerate about it being bad. Yes it is quite annoying when people who don't know better say stupid shit. But, it's not their fault. They don't know better. You do, so you shouldn't berate them. Just point them in the direction of an alternative and say "if you like this, then maybe you should check this out, it's X's forebear in the genre". Taking the piss would be like laughing at a baby and calling it a retard because it falls down when it learns to walk.
You just look like a fucking asshole.
You just have to accept that there's going to be new people coming to games with all the mainstream attention gaming is getting. It's no longer your personal hobby. People of all ages are now coming to gaming as a source of entertainment. Like anybody new to something, they'll make mistakes and bad purchases and rave about what are essentially rehashes or poor copies of much better games. If they enjoy it, so what? They're not forcing you to play it. It's not hurting you in any way.

I agree, im 14 and granted the 1st FPS I beat was Halo, granted I dont like it but I get annoyed at almost every person my age that does that but I just say, take a look at the original Doom etc. they usually dont come to there senses on how mediocre Halo technicaly is (IMO) but at least they get informed that Halo didnt invent the genre.devilmyarse wrote:That's a flawed argument. If you believe that games have stopped evolving, then you can just GTFO this thread, thanks. You're living in a delusion.devilmyarse wrote:That's a flawed argument. Showing them better games is not "berating them".Yes it is quite annoying when people who don't know better say stupid shit. But, it's not their fault. They don't know better. What does this have to do with anything? Are you drunk?Taking the piss would be like laughing at a baby and calling it a retard because it falls down when it learns to walk.
A swing and a miss. I'm not sure you even realize what thread you posted in. I'm a big supporter of games getting mainstream attention and bringing in new people. I've said so in other threads. You're missing the subject entirely. You just have to accept that there's going to be new people coming to games with all the mainstream attention gaming is getting.
