Did you ever buy a game solely for its box art?

Post by Nutty »

Now, of course this would have been more prominent when game reviews were not nearly as accessible (8/16 bit) but I'm also curious if anyone has done it recently, without knowing what they were really buying.

I remember seeing this in a Toy's R Us shortly after my parents bought me an SNES. I persuaded them to pick it up for me after telling them it was an awesome game, even though I didn't really know myself (never played it in the arcade).... I was lucky, because of course it was amazing.

Has anyone else done this throughout their gaming history?

I'm pretty sure that's how I looked for games as a kid. I mainly rented games from Blockbuster because it was cheaper and usually by about a week I would be able to beat a game. And if I really liked it I would buy it.

but I would pretty much choose the games based on how cool they looked on the shelf. I had no internet to tell me what the game was like if it sucked or not.

I think a few times as a kid I wanted my parents to buy games for me cause of cool box art.

Mostly the ones I ended up getting were games I heard cool things about from other kids (Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Blue Version), or games I saw on TV commercials (Banjo Kazooie), or if I played them in a store (Super Mario 64.)

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

Art style caught my eye at the time.

I still buy games for their art - particularly if it is a game I enjoy playing. I have multiple versions of Radirgy and Power Stone 2 for this reason.

Conversely - anytime real people are used on a non-sports title, I can't enjoy the games. Wizards and Warriors 2 (Fabio) and Super Buster Bros. (2 annoying looking kids) come to mind.

As a kid and in a time before the internet, I'd say so yeah. Nowadays though, not at all. I'm all about being authentic, but ... okay wait, Thunder Force V had a holographic cover so when I found it at some trade in store I thought it was insanely rare or some collectors item, so I bought it haha. But then again I knew about the Thunder Force series at that point anyways and would have gotten it someday anyways. Turns out that's just the normal cover I'm pretty sure.

Now I'm going to have to say there's never really anything that impressive with box art nowadays compared to the old. But I'm a sucker for 80/90's cover art I guess.

I almost bought Ballz 3D today, for the box. It was $5, but I know the store it's for sale at pretty well; that game will still be there 2 years from now.

I'm not just saying Ballz 3D as a joke, I really did consider buying it today.
