I think it's important we establish whether by 'third gen' the OP means NES era or PS1 era

Thanks so much for all the suggestions guys. I think I'm gonna go with the SMS. If I can get this do you think it's a good deal? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Master-Sys ... 1e66b6144c

Thanks

Third gen is the NES/SMS/7800 era. Why would he mean PS1?

I've known people who consider NES the 'first gen' and for some reason ignore all the previous stuff

Whether it's a good deal or not depends on the price at which the auction ends. We'll let you know in four days.

You mean hours, correct?

Also, what's a good SMS title to start out with?

Wonder Boy 3: The Dragons Trap would always be my first pick, as it's one of the best games on the system, if not the absolute best. Other great starting picks:

Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Phantasy Star
Castle of Illusion
Fantasy Zone
Sonic the Hedgehog
Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Those are ones I have played and would heartily recommend. There's plenty else good out there, but I chose one's I've personally beaten.

What's the point asking everyone else what collect for and suddenly collect for that system? You don't even know what games it has and only reason you choose it, because it wasn't most popular in US or Japan. Is there any sense in that? Or is this exactly the collector mentality that I don't understand; just hoard random stuff that looks nice on shelf? I don't mean to be rude, I'm just saying maybe it'd be better if you thought about it twice.

At least see if you find any interesting games for the Master System. I'd be personally more interested in the NES game library wise though, but SMS is indeed good choice from hoarding point of view, as the games are cheap as CIB. Sure there's many cool games there too, no doubt.

The SMS with those ugly boxes would be the last thing I'd buy so it 'looks nice on a shelf'
